Hello Again,

Does anyone know about legalities, training (if any) about in-house crimping of air / oxygen hose connectors, has it just been put about by companies or do legalities exist. Again I can't find any information.

Dave.

It is included on the "Anaesthetic Equipment Maintenance" course at Falfield. No big deal, as long as you have the tools (and strong fingers). smile

Looking through BS EN739:1998 there is a very brief section on
joining hoses to hose inserts (section 5.4.10 onwards).
Basically stating that the inserts shall be connected by swaged or crimped ferrules, the assembly of which should be with tools providing reproducable crimping performance.
It shall be impossible to remove any ferrule without it becoming unfit for reuse and no worm screw or detachable clips or clamps shall be used.

The exception to the above is for that of hoses used for driving powered instruments.

In days gone by we would scribe the date of asssembly and the techs initials onto the ferrule.

The EN I'm looking at could have been superceded (as they often are without us knowing too much about it!) so it may be worthwhile contacting BS for a possible update.

Technical Services at Hilrom Medaes based in Staveley, Derbys, may also be forthcoming with assisting you in scourcing further info.

Is it still going? Closure was always on the cards some years back.

Hi Geoff

I see it's now called Eastwood Park

All those years ago it was the Hospital Estate Management and Engineering Centre (Falfield)

I suppose someone realised how useful these guys are and decided not to close down.

There's no reason this cant be done on site. You can get all the bits from Oxylitre, Therapy Equipment or Penlon, and im sure many more.
You just have to have the right guys for the job and a procedure that takes into account the mentioned standards. Make sure everything is logged and you have a mechanism for checking the next due date for replacement.

Yes indeed, Karl, spot on.

Terry, it sounds like you need to make one more trip down Memory Lane, Mate. Junction 14 of the M5. Eastwood Park is in private hands (and has been for many years). They have a lot of other "activities" going on there these days ("corporate gatherings", weddings, and stuff like that). But the grub's still good, that's the main thing. smile

Thinking about it, perhaps we should have a "reunion" there, one of these fine summer evenings (which can't be too far away, I hope).
