Thanks for the info Brian.
I definately don't want to reinvent the wheel. What I'm looking for, and the reason I've posted here, is to find out what would make buying pumps easier (volumetric, syringe, PCA and ambulatory) and what could be included that could make life easier for you and the trusts.
As for the actucal buying, I am looking at both buying the pumps and linked deals with consumables.

Selvester Are you part of PASA? If so, then I would guess that your looking for a national agreement on pricing for both the hardware and disposables. However, I believe that this then only acts as a guide with regard to pricing and that locally agreed pricing can still be negotiated below this. If this is the case, then I will also assume that the companies chosen to participate will not be offering their maximum discounts.

Meanwhile, we'll all be waiting (with a sense of eager anticipation, no doubt) to hear which one you've gone for (and, even better, why?).

Kawasaki, the idea would be that the framework makes the whole process easier with competitive prices so that trusts don't need to go through the tender process themselves. That's why I am looking for some input of what would make things easier. Gazpacho, how many pumps have you tendered for?

That's all very well, Selvester, but what about the "hurt feelings" of the manufacturers and/or suppliers thereby left out in the cold? Free market competition not only drives down prices, but (more importantly, in my view) also stimulates innovation! Well, that's the theory, at any rate.

The problem with the frameworks are you cannot then go and renegotiate a better deal than the initial price on the framework agreement pricelist so a pump off the list is say £2000 but if you go direct to the supplier it could be anything from £1200

Geoff, It's not always a sole award, there's potential for multi-supplier award depending on the market and customer requirements. The idea is to work with both suppliers and trusts.

Selvester, I'm not sure I understand what you're trying to do (and your Profile doesn't hint at many clues), but now that NHS hospitals (well, Trusts at least) are supposed to be run as independent businesses, I can't really see the need for a "middle man". Especially (as has already been mentioned), they could (will, most likely) end up paying more than had they "gone direct". Which "business model" are we talking about here?
