I got a reply from the very nice MP who has allegedly not had more away than a couple of biros, or so the local rag says, and he wishes to see if there is any way he can help our plight as lowly misunderstood medical engineers and the like. Watch this space....

Myself, I have never er, understood this constant need amongst the biomed fraternity to be "understood", "respected", "recognised" ... and all the rest. To me this constant bleating (if it does anything at all), tends to undermine the "profession" (which, by the way, it isn't*) rather than promote it.

Hospitals and healthcare is about patients, doctors and nurses. Engineering (and other support services) must take a back seat ... and rightly so. What's wrong with simply being content with your (our) quiet confidence in doing a job that needs to be done, and doing it well?

Let's leave ideas like "Biomeds' Day" in North America, where different rules seem to apply!

* Note: we are engineering technicians who happen to work with medical equipment (that is, rather than defence equipment, office systems, radio communications and all the rest). As I keep saying, there is nothing special about medical equipment itself... it is only the environment in which it is used that makes it so. But (there again) the same can be said of weapon systems.

my only gripe is that those of us under the works department banner are tarred with the same brush i.e. all those little cottage hospitals have gone so works department "estate" has shrunk whilse our "estate" i.e. medical devices continues to expand faster than an MP's expenses account and we have to beg to buy a new safety tester every 10 years

It was ever thus. And to save endlessly repeating myself, I have offered the answer to issues such as this (and many more) on this forum over the last five years or so!

As I say, just take pride in your own work, do what you can, and let the rest of the [censored] go to [censored]!

About the bike (so as to get back on track) ... have you tried eBay? You realise, no doubt, that you may (most likely will) have to take a hit?

I know, I've lost thousands on bikes over the years, bad deals etc so I now need just to get rid of it, pay for the wedding (well beer fund part of it anyway) and then convince my beloved that we need a Trumph daytona when we get back from honeymoon. £1300 will seal a deal...anyone????

Here's my sincere and considered advice (for which there is no charge):- cancel the wedding, and get the bike back on the road!

Everyone who knows me says I'm a hared-hearted bugger, so why change the habits of a lifetime now? People often thank me, though ... in the end.

I just had a conversation with the spinal consultant that is "working" on my disc problem, the real reason I'm having to sell the bike. 4 years later on, the MRI I had last week, was of the wrong area and I didn't have the contrast media injected...absolutely brilliant..not!...and I'm on call this weekend so no chance of the pub either :-(

Sorry to hear about all that. I can see now why gentler pursuits may well appeal.

OK ... sell the bike to fund a restoration project of a good old Triumph twin from the Meriden era.

I always liked the smaller ones myself, like the Speed Twin for example. I had a 750 twin from new in 1974, but to be honest, it was a heap of [censored]! But I had an old (worn out) Triumph Twenty-One that I used to ride around Hong Kong (of all places), with no trouble at all. Apart from burning a bit of oil (worn valve guides), that is.

Talking about bikes (and meandering yet again down Memory Lane), one of the best little bikes I ever had was a 250 Ducati single. That was the one I passed my test on. But like all (?) Italian bikes, it had a beautiful engine, but "poor" electrics!

And (in the spirit of "full disclosure"), things got so bad financially in 1978 that I could not afford to fix my 650 AJS, and was reduced to commuting on a 250 Jawa two-stroke twin. But, again to be honest, that was a very cost-effective bike, that never let me down. Which is more than can be said for Meriden's finest. It even produced its own smoke screen!

PS: if Mr. Huw opened up the File Manager for this thread, I might even be able to find some pictures!
