Hi Team

I am looking for a sample specification for a medical laser. The present requirements are for TURP and another for Urological 'stones', though we are also looking at purchasing ENT lasers.

A general or specific specification is all that I need as a sample to extract good and pertinent sections to produce one that meets with our needs.

Assuming that not all purchases are from the national framework agreement for these devices, then a specification will have needed to be produced, OJEU, etc.

We are also looking at the Thulium laser product, do any of you guys have any experience with these from a technical evaluation, clinical trials, reliability perspective, etc?

Equipment specs are not free, just purchased a lithotripsy laser through a tender using my specs, send PM for costing.

But whilst I applaud your sentiments, Neil, please don't forget that Jim works within the framework of the British National Health Service. So it is quite probable that one of his colleagues (in another NHS hospital, perhaps) has already worked up a generic spec that fits the bill!

So you are saying that his colleagues should donate for free, because they both work in the NHS. In that case the NHS should have their own specs, but as with NHS documentation especially engineering "they don't come free"

You're preaching to the converted there, Mate, as far as I'm concerned. I take the simplistic (naïve?) view that the NHS belongs to the People. It is paid for by the People, and it's for the benefit of the People.

So, any work that's done in NHS time is done for the People, and anything produced in NHS time belongs to the People.

The documents I imagine you are referring to (HEI's, Health Building Notes ... or whatever such things are called these days) are freely available to those working within the NHS, but have to be paid for (quite rightly) by outsiders (of which, of course, I am one).

Yes, the NHS should have their own specs, developed and held centrally for use when required. If the MoH in Riyadh can do it (and they do), why not the NHS in the UK?

The MOH is done in word format with a simple yes/no answer, mine is done in excel format asking for values, ranges, accessories plus all relevant details regarding installation, pre-installation etc. Thats why I charge.

Sounds like you're talking about an RFQ ... or PPQ, there Neil.

I was thinking more about the equipment specs held by the MoH (National Guard, MODA, Royal Commission et al). The MoH had their own (actually I know the origin of them ... they weren't done in Riyadh, of course ... not back in 1976 at any rate). And some of the others just mentioned are based upon American Federal Specs, ECRI and other sources.

But the key thing is that standard equipment specs are held, in a rationalised and standardised format, they continue to be developed in light of experience, and are used when seeking tenders for new equipment (not to mention new hospitals)!

There's nothing wrong with consultants charging for their services. They (we) have to eat just like everyone else!

As I've already mentioned, one of the key things about them is that they continued to be developed!

Frankly (during my time), a lot of them were [censored]! Those couldn't have been the ones you did, of course!

But, to be honest, I haven't come across a set of specs yet from any source that weren't deficient in some respect. Just as long as there is a mechanism for correcting them (and, unfortunately, there have been occasions when there hasn't been), that doesn't matter overly much. Just as long as someone in the loop has, shall we say, a clue!

I would hope not - but if you saw any from the (very) late eighties - they would have been mine.
