What do you think the minimal number of staff (and at what grades) is for a hospital as follows,

The Royal Free Hampstead NHS Trust has around 900 beds and sees about 700,000 patients a year from all over the world . We employ around 4,600 people and have a turnover of about £450m.

We have a large theaters and ITU department.

Very well. And how many items of equipment do you have to maintain? smile

22000 acording to the database. Although probably about 18000 that we would have to service.

I would say 50.
Based on the fact we have approx 40 Technical staff (excluding Managers)and our Trust beds / staff and turnover are a little less than yours (i believe).
We post Techs in small teams specialising in certain areas (ICU, NNU, Theatres, Radiotherapy, Surgical Instruments, Mech, general EBME e.t.c.) therefore our grades may be a little higher than a centralised model. Generally there is 1 band 7 and 1 or more Band 6,5 or 4 in each area depending on the speciality.

That's a lot of kit!

Based upon yardsticks that I used to factor in back when I was involved with (that is, bidding on) biomed O&M contracts, at first glance it would be somewhere between 20 and 40 techs for a full service (properly conducted PM etc.) scenario.

The precise number of blokes would depend upon close scrutiny of details of the actual requirement. Obviously, it's all down to anticipated (and planned) workload (that is, careful calculation of the man-hours per annum etc. needed to carry out the task).

Are you looking for bids? smile

Very rough guide from where I work..........

Senior managements view.......
1000 testable assets = one tech
Managers who actually manage at the coal face view.....
800 testable assets = one tech
Techs view.........
None, I hate doing PMs, it's so boring !

Hi

Use Kiwi Biomeds - ah...

We would do the job with about 20 Biomeds.

1100 per Biomed per annum is about normal for NZ.

Yes, it would seem that one tech for 1,000 mixed assets has become the norm these days. But I continue to believe that if the job is to be carried through "properly" (with 100% PM, etc.) then the number of techs needs to be at least twice that (one tech for 500 assets).

And if we want to aim at six-monthly PM in general, and 90 days for critical kit (as I always have done), we're back to a figure of one tech for each 250 to 300 items (depending upon type).

But, as I say, if you want to arrive at an accurate figure, you need to work out how much time you're likely to spend on each item every year, add it all up, and divide by whatever man-year number you prefer to use. This is where spreadsheets* have really proved their worth. It was such a pain doing all that "long-hand" back in the Days of Yore!

I notice that Webbie has yet to tell us how many techs there are at the Royal Free. But he has told us the the Trust employs 4,600 staff. So would it be too much to ask to have 1% of those as biomeds? smile

There's something wrong there ... PM is the job! Sounds like management needs to do a bit of ... er, motivating!

* I still have a few Lotus 1-2-3 ones kicking around "among my souvenirs"!
