Hints for Life
author unknown

It hurts to love someone and not be loved in return, But what is more painful is to love someone and never find the courage to let that person know how you feel.

A sad thing in life is when you meet someone who means a lot to you, only to find out in the end that it was never meant to be and you just have to let go.

The best kind of friend is the kind you can sit on a porch swing with, never say a word, and then walk away feeling like it was the best evening you've ever had.

It's true that we don't know what we've got until we lose it, but it's also true that we don't know what we've been missing until it arrives.

It takes only a minute to get a crush on someone, an hour to like someone, and a day to love someone-but it takes a lifetime to forget someone.

Don't go for looks; they can deceive. Don't go for wealth; even that fades away. Go for someone who makes you smile because it takes only a smile to make a dark day seem bright.

Dream what you want to dream; go where you want to go; be what you want to be, because you have only one life and one chance to do all the things you want to do.

Always put yourself in the other's shoes. If you feel that it hurts you, it probably hurts the person too.

A careless word may kindle strife; a cruel word may wreck a life; a timely word may level stress; a loving word may heal and bless.

The happiest of people don't necessarily have the best of everything they just make the most of everything that comes along their way.

Love begins with a smile, grows with a kiss, ends with a tear. When you were born, you were crying and everyone around you was smiling. Live your life so that when you die, you're the one smiling and everyone around you is crying.

Always remember- Life is precious, don't let it slip by.

Desiderata

Go placidly amid the noise and haste,and remember what peace there may be in silence.

As far as possible, without surrender,be on good terms with all persons.

Speak your truth quietly and clearly;and listen to others,even the dull and the ignorant;they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons for they are vexatious to the spirit.

If you compare yourself with others,you may become vain or bitter,
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.

Enjoy your achievements as well as your dreams.

Keep interested in your own career, however humble;
it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs,for the world is full of trickery.

But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;many persons strive for high ideals,and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection.

Neither be cynical about love,for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment,it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years,gracefully surrendering the things of youth.

Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.

But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.

Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline,be gentle with yourself.

You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars;you have a right to be here.

And whether or not it is clear to you,no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God,whatever you conceive Him to be.

And whatever your labors and aspirations,in the noisy confusion of life,keep peace with your soul.

With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,it is still a beautiful world.

Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream -- and not make dreams your master;
If you can think -- and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two imposters just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools;

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!"

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings -- nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run --
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And -- which is more -- you'll be a Man, my son!

Desiderata (Latin: "things desired") was written by the American, Max Ehrmann. His masterpiece is especially appealing, not only for its gentle wisdom, but also for its timeless quality.

The "Life is precious, don't let it slip by" poem (and its variations) is indeed usually attributed to Anon.

There are any number of other similar pieces, but if I had to single out another one of note it would have to be "Footprints in the Sand" by Mary Stevenson.

And, of course, my other favourite, the one about the bhisti "Gunga Din" (also by our immortal friend, Rudyard).

I would also commend "The Living Years" by Mike and the Mechanics! smile

How about IF (2)? smile

If you can start the day without caffeine,
If you can get going without pep pills,
If you can always be cheerful, ignoring aches and pains,
If you can resist complaining and boring people with your troubles;
If you can eat the same food every day and be grateful for it,
If you can understand when your loved ones are too busy to give you any time;
If you can overlook it when those you love take it out on you when, through no fault of yours, something goes wrong;
If you can take criticism and blame without resentment,
If you can ignore a friend's limited education and never correct him;
If you can resist treating a rich friend better than a poor one,
If you can face the world without lies and deceit;
If you can can conquer tension without medical help,
If you can relax without liquor,
If you can sleep without the aid of drugs;
If you can say honestly that deep in your heart you have no prejudice against creed, colour, religion or politics;
Then, my friend, you are almost as good as your dog.

If you don't inspect ... don't expect.

Here's one that I have carried around for many years. It's unlikely that many of you will have come across it before, unless (that is) you happen to have leafed through a copy of "Mind Body & Spirit" (the Journal of the Army Physical Training Corps) from November 1977.

THE INDISPENSABLE MAN

Some time when you're feeling important,
Some time when your ego's in bloom,
Some time when you take it for granted
You're the best qualified man in the room.
Some time when you feel that your going
Would leave an unfillable hole,
Just follow these simple instructions,
Add see how they humble your soul.
Take a bucket and fill it with water,
Put your hands in it up to your wrists.
Pull them out - and the hole that remains
Is the measure of how much you'll be missed.
You may splash all you please when you enter,
You may stir up the water galore,
But stop: and you'll find in a minute
That it looks just the same as before.
The moral of this is quite simple,
You must do the best that you can,
Be proud of yourself but remember
There is no indispensable man.

If you don't inspect ... don't expect.
