Thats ok if the equipment lead knows what they are doing and communicates to those left that they are now responsible for kit. All you out there know that alot of the tasks you are asked to do are so diverse that it would take a very loosly worded contract to cover it all.

The problem exist when you have a mix in a department. Contractors are trying to prove they are more cost effective and some of them may cut corners to show how fast they are. Personnally I would rather be on a piece of equipment that the engineer had taken their time and done it right and had the correct manufacturers course. I for one if any of my relatives are injured in hospital I will be asking for all the records of equipment including who serviced it, were they trained and was proper parts used on repairs. We put our trust and life in a service, I would hope that it is not down to who is the cheapest.

Your points are well taken, Billy.

But when you say "contractors" are you talking about individual agency techs, or a company?

And ... cheapest? In which way (cheaper than what)? smile

Well Geoff,

If you had taken time out and attended the Birmingham confer, you would have a better picture of what is happening....

You have to know what is going on in your "back Yard" as they say down under

I don't much go for gossip, or tittle-tattle, Umish. frown

If anyone has something important to tell us all ... why not say it right here?

I leave that sort of thing to the "Professionals", Umish. whistle

OK ... let’s get to the bottom of this (even though it’s like drawing hens’ teeth):- are we talking about foreign agency workers, "pretend biomeds" (wannabees), blokes who didn't impress you, (otherwise) experienced techs working on kit unfamiliar to them, competent blokes without "certificates of comfort", "educated idiots" with no practical nous ... or what?

In my experience, agency jobs are few and far between these days, so it should be a "buyer’s market" ... unless, that is, *managers are looking for the cheapest possible guy. In that case, when "you pay peanuts, you get monkeys"!

* Or agents looking for the maximum possible margin (profit).

If any hospital, trust etc. wanted to bring in 'contractors' it would have to have the approval of the executive and financial department; so any problems would be on their head so to speak, as for conferences and seminars if there is information that is vital to the future of healthcare it should be readily available to everyone in the business not just attendees. ps CPD ????

If the patient is a beautiful young female then CPR, other than that it's not my problem.
