I think that the idea is that the tech does the Falfield course before starting at the hospital, Bill. whistle

The course is an introduction to biomedical engineering, is it not?

As already mentioned, I also like the "mentoring model" myself. But in these days of ticking the right boxes, the need for a tome of certificates, and all the rest (especially in the NHS) ... I would have thought that attendance at the Falfield course was a basic requirement. You know, an official piece of paper saying that a tech is a biomed! A starting point, or rite of passage, if you like. After all (and as we know), it was once run by the NHS itself (and still should be, in my opinion).

G'day Dave,
Great idea boot camp, how long has the scheme been running?

Have you had good tech's come out of the boot camp?

Hi Guys, I am in the process of seting up a training structure for our engineers. At present we have no 'planned' training or progression and training is only given/recived on a 'as and when required' basis. We also do not have any accurate method of recording/assessing an indivuals level of knowledge. My plan is to address these issues by introducing an engineering focused CPD portfolio for each staff member. It would be interesting to hear what other departments are using for assessment methods and what sort of audits are carried out and by whom?

I would also be interested to hear of any training courses/schemes which are not OEM/device specific. I have been through the Eastwood park Fsc as part of the first cohort and although the information received was very good it is a long, expensive and maybee daunting venture to send new recruits on straight away without any previous knowledge.

Thanks,

Whether you like it or not this is the official HPC / IPEM / VRCT training scheme.
Without following this you cannot become registered in the future and if you are not registered will you have a job?

Grandfathering and the like has been and gone so now I believe it is official training or nothing.
This includes a degree which must be approved by HPC / IPEM but does anyone know if there is an approved degree? Last time I checked there was not one.

You need to plan for the future and the future is registration.

Robert

If the future is 'registration' then I am glad that I will not be part of that future. Seen too many people with degrees who don't know their a**e from their elbow.

Assuming, of course, that we are talking about the UK's National Health Service (the biggest employer [of Jobsworths?] in Western Europe). smile

Registration is the future, and I can hear them now 'can't do that not registered see so and so I am sure he is registered' regardless of training or skills. Give me the old school anytime.

RoJo (et al),

I am appalled. This sort of nonsense will only cut out a great number of very talented people.

My advise to all of you who may have the ground cut out from under you by this sort of thing, apply for a work visa to Oz or NZ where your real talents will be appreciated and we are much less concerned with bits of paper.

Odd, is it not, that I have managed to work for 20+ years in this industry and even rise to a "senior management" position with only a couple of "City and Guilds".

[censored] to the lot of them I would say. Talent and common sense will win out over a piece of paper (though the two things are not mutually exclusive I'll grant you) every time.

Glad I emigrated grin
