OK. I can't see why there should be any annual increment ... unless they are earned ( eg, as a reward for some sort of exceptional effort, above and beyond the call of duty, or some such thing). Merry Christmas everyone (a bit early, but never mind)!

What's that, Neil? Thicker oil costs more, but has a greater damping effect? That reminds me ... when are we going to see the EBME Christmas crossword puzzle?

Ah ah! Now we know where those strange posts come from. My own are due to being distracted by the voices in my head, you know. But about the crossword ... I'm assuming that *Santa's Elves are cranking one out even as we write! * Or should that be Sandham's?

Hello Garrith
The chances are that the Unions will want the no compulsary redundancies in exchange for an increment freeze. Most large companies manage redundancies by the voluntary route before the more messy compulsary route. The Unions would also have to accept the redeployment of staff after any staff reduction. Anyone feeling strongly that it is breaking contracts to have an incremental freeze should get to their local union meetings and get support and record their objections. As for being made redundant in the private sector, the same legal rules apply and it is a shame that some members of the working class feel the need to snipe at others (especially public sector workers) rather than directing their bitterness against the system that allowed this financial mess to occur.

Very astute, Barney. I think. Care to remind us which "system" it was that you're referring to here?

I'm quite clear where the fault lies, it of course is the system that we have been sleep walking along with for far too many years, trusting in politicians (left, right and centre) who chant the word democracy at every opportunity and who at the same time keep telling us what is good for us when all surveys point otherwise. My country has changed, often beyond recognition, by politicians ignoring the wishes of the (dare I say?), British People and carrying out social engineering and telling us all how beneficial it is. How to effect a change? I don't know since the majority of voters have little influence, the Trade Unions still will support the so called left irrespective of the concerns of the majority of their members and the Toffs have now all become Liberals.

Barney, I think you'll find that the Liberals have become Conservatives,we all know who's wearing the trousers in that relationship. Also I don't know if the Union's will support the increment freeze, they've already accepted the pay freeze on similar grounds with the last government.
Also it seems that any redundancies will be more political than financial. The Tories have already said that the public sector is bloated and want people to move to the private sector. (although The Times points out that, that many jobs don't exist) Although in The Times it seems to suggest that if any cuts the most will be up north with 55% of one town employed in the public sector. Although this will be a big U turn on the no front-line redundancies in the NHS pledge.
