My mistake, I was thinking of DB2000(02) that I had been writing about. Sorry, It would be one hell of a file to download. Robert
My spelling is not bad. I am typing this on a Medigenic keyboard and I blame that for all my typos.

We decided a long time ago that it is not worth prolonging the life of out of date/obsolete equipment by cannabalising. If a piece of obsolete equipment dies it is scrapped and an email is sent to the various managers, including finance, informing them of the demise anmd that the quipment will be disposed of appropriately. It is then up to them to find the resources to replace the item. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't but on the whole it has been quite successful.
I don't believe in the practice. I believe in delivering a quality service and that can't be provided by using old parts which are just as old amd just as likely to fail within, possibly, a short period of time. I think it prolongs the life for a short time and allows the management to ignore the situation for a little longer.
Time is of the essence. Don't abuse it. Just make the most of it.

I agree with Joe one hundred percent the trust’s “Dons” can eliminate all risk by waving their financial wand over the situation, however, consider me a paranoid old fart if you will but do you think for one minute the Vendors religiously uses new, off the shelf parts. Also on the note of swapping parts, how many of you will use a good machine to fault find a similar faulty device?

If a vendor didn't use new of the shelf parts I would be asking very serious questions of there procedures and looking at the possibility taking legal action against the said vendor, in particular if they had charged the full whack for the item.
I would expect if the vendor was ISO 9000 registered this would not be allowed under there quality system unless of course it was written in to there procedures if it were acceptable.

It all depends on where you are. For instance, in Papua New Guinea it is common practice. That's one of the reasons that biomedding is much more fun overseas.

I was interested to hear on last nights news that the £250,000,000 worth of Chinook helicopters the Ministry of Defence screwed up specifications on procurement are now being cannibalised for parts.
Perhaps some of our Techs with military engineering training could tell us how common cannibalistaion for parts is with military equipment ?

What a great opportunity this could be for "swinging the lamp"! Unfortunately, though, there is a piece of legislation known as The Official Secrets Act.

Dear Geoff
Have you ever seen a publication called Jane's?
Surely basic general maintenance facts can't really be official secrets Military procurement is open to public scrutiny
It really doesn't matter to me but it seems decidedly strange to cite official secrets over such a trivial matter. After all, youve posted your own name and a list of old military colleagues on the web. If it's all so secret then what are you doing advertising your secret job?

One night there was three British Army fugitives escaping from a prison of war camp. One was an Irishman, one was an Englishman and the other was a Welshman. They had the Enemy hot on their trail and quickly thinking the Englishman points out an old, abandoned factory perfect for hiding in. When all three were inside the Welshman, quickly thinking said they should all hide in old potatoe sacks in the corner as they could hear the enemy approaching the factory. They all got in their little potatoe sacks and barely a minute later the enemy came crashing through the door. They looked at the sacks and said 'Hmm maybe they are hiding in these' The officer kicks the Welshman's sack and he makes whimpering noises. 'Hmm just puppies in that sack' The officer kicks the Englishman's sack and he makes mewing noises. 'Hmm just kittens in that sack' He says. He finally kicks the Irishman's sack and he hears....
'POTATOES POTATOES!'
