just a word of warning!!

i was told of a hospital which used third party batteries the same type which was in their machine but they only lasted a few months. The ones supplied by the manufactuer(which were twice the price) looked the same but the posts were upgraded to take the large o/p required by mobile x-ray.

Give it a go
We tried to get batteries for a mobile X-Ray. The manufacturer deliberately speced the original American specification batteries so we couldn’t get them easily. Then when they came to fit them, they used standard batteries of a different spec.

On top of this they also didn’t seam to care about performance differences or conformity issues.

I won’t mention the name of the company but it’s a biggy
So sometimes its worth a go from a third party supplier

I hear a lot of stories about mobile x-ray unit batteries these days. I'm assuming that we're talking about batteries that power the unit, rather than traction batteries here (or are they one and the same)? think

Folk reckon that they need to be "original" ... but I wonder about this. Surely the manufacturer of the unit itself doesn't also make the batteries as well?

I note also that such "battery packs" are also sometimes packaged in weird and wonderful shapes. Just to make them harder to source, no doubt. frown

We never had such problems with (traction) batteries back in the Old Days. Such batteries back then were always hefty lead-acid types, that lasted for years. I recall replacing a set once, and then having one of them soldier on for a further few years under the bonnet of my old Saab!

We had a similar problem with the GE AMX4 mobiles and the battreies used in them .GE state that you must use the High current version of the Panasonic battery .THis is due to the deep charge cycles that the machine does every tenth charge or so. We then discovered that GE were supplying the non HC type to us for lots of bucks (£600) when in fact the very same LC version of the battery is available from Euroenergy for about £70 all in!!
We have been using them now for well over a year and all appears well.

If this was the USA then all the battreis would be easily available from a number of suppliers .Unfortunately shipping small quntities of heavy items from the US is not economical.

Geoff . The AMX 4 batts are used for both traction and power ublike the older machines.

I believe the battreies I am looking are still Lead acid technology and are 12 Volt at 8 amp/hour and there are 20 of them inside the machine.....cant quite understand why so many of such a small capacity ,must be to do with space?

Thanks for you feedback and i will just have to keep looking .

Regards
Pete .

Yes ... it's just yet another example of "Rip-Off Britain"! frown

Why not have a go at knocking up a trailer (as big as need be), and bunging some decent-sized "off-the-shelf" (auto) batteries on there? Or would that be seen as a "modification"? think

If you put a cushion on top, I'm sure that the radiographer would be glad of the ride.

I am sure that would be classed as a modifacation and cause major problems getting in and out of the Lifts!!

Rpi off Britian ??Possibly !! More like the NHS not acting like the big company it really is and and using it's potential buying power to make these manufactures sing to to our tune for a change!!

You're preaching to the converted there, Pete.

But I've been told many times (right here on the forum) that the NHS these days isn't like that, at all. Rather, each "Trust" is run as a self-contained "business" (cost centre, whatever ... the suits would know).

So much, then, for "progress".

It's pretty obvious that the whole thing (the largest employer in Western Europe) has been totally out of control for many years, with mega amounts of tax-payers money being chucked into the Black Hole ... without any tangible improvement in the health (that is, the real health) of the population at large.

We probably need to go back and start afresh. But with the "quality" of political leadership we are used to seeing these days, I can't see that happening in my lifetime (more's the pity).

Meanwhile, back to batteries:- I'm sure that many of us can remember when mobile x-ray units, and the batteries that were fitted to them, were manufactured right here in England.

So it's a big "thank you", then, to successive governments who have sold this once great country down the river. frown
