But (seeing as you ask), here are a couple of points:-
1) Yes ... the army knows when stuff is missing (items get checked out, signed for, and checked back in again ... and counted regularly when in stores).

et al are not in Afghanistan.
3) Those reports are hardly current.
4) Note that those responsible for theft (
etc.) get punished (does that ever happen in the NHS?).
5) In my experience, army officers have more of a tendency than "the men" to be sloppy about security of personal weapons ... that's why they need Platoon Sergeants!
5) I wish I could remember where I buried the Lewis gun.
For what it's worth, I also notice that the "firer" in the the BBC link is not holding the weapon correctly.
