OK, Sean ... fair enough. But as I said, it's a "Post Code lottery". And ... how about my other points? Is the VRCT any worse (or better) than any of the other "stuff" we have to put up with? @Lee: yes, things are often better out in the Shires, Mate. I have been around a bit, you know. Understandably, you guys can't help but see things from the inside, as it were. But there is another viewpoint:- from the outside, looking in. The Bigger Picture, if you like.

Probably not Geoff, many organisations, such as councils provide poor services and do not represent value for money. The difference being that the VRCT is not mandatory, liken them to a utility company, or a bank. If you are unhappy with the level of service, find an alternative service provider. Such utility companies who fail to deliver on promises are complacent until people start to leave, then they either change, or fail. The VRCT is in my view, already earmarked for the latter.

OK, so I hope we can agree that, in general, competition is a "good thing" ... which, as far as the VRCT is concerned, is what you've been driving at under this thread, Sean. But ... how to achieve this? To be honest, I've haven't noticed too many "genius ideas" from others on here yet. BTW (and IMHO) real (rather than "pretend", or by sleight of hand, or contrived so-called "internal markets") competition would obtain healthy outcomes for the NHS, as well.

I agree real competition would help obtain healthy outcomes for services provided by the NHS. I for one, having gone through the market testing / tendering exercise more than once, feel confident that the services I help provide, represent value for tax payers money, and welcome the opportunity to prove it!
A switched on Biomedical Department has nothing to fear from healthy competition.

Well on that, we can both agree Geoff.
When it comes to competition for my subscription fee, I shall be seeking an alternative provider, one that delivers on their promises, (unlike the VRCT).

Failure to Renew your Registration: If you fail to renew your registration with the Voluntary Register of Clinical Technologists by the 31st March each year the following will occur: 1. The renewal fee will increase to £30.00 and a further payment window of 1st April to 31st May will be instigated. 2. If you fail to pay during this further payment window your VRCT registration will be cancelled and you will be required to re-apply to join the Register. At this stage we will write to your employer indicating that you have been removed from the Register for non-payment of your registration fee. Sean This has been part of the VRCT membership guidance criteria for many years so it is nothing new. Thus if you have joined the VRCT you agreed to that process. If you don't agree you should not have joined! Jim

"The December 5th report will be published soon" Jim Methven 04 Feb 2013
The promised report has failed to materialise. In mitigation, this failure may be attributed to the seasonal heavy workload caused by preparing VRCT subscription reminders, and drafting notification letters to the Managers of those who have chosen not to renew subscription.
The U.K. Biomedical community may rest assured, that the VRCT organisation takes a serious view, and prioritises the:
(Please select as appropriate)
Delivery upon promises made on a public forum
Collection of subscriptions and revenues
Sean This report was actually published yesterday however the link seems to be broken - so apologies for that. I will try and ensure that this is sorted tomorrow. Jim
