3d printing is just the latest iteration of this technology. A mate of mine has been working for a printing company for 25 years. Traditional printing started to stagnate at the turn of the century and they started looking for other lines to pursue, to bring in other business.
They were successful implementing some more cutting edge technology and for the last few years they have been printing medical catheters.

In the US they are "printing" calcium based ceramic artificial bone for cranioplasty.
But I think frequently snapped plastic parts are more realistic for every day use.

Sorry Dave, you're going to have to print your own from the stuff I left behind a couple of years ago at that shed in Bedfordshire.

@Dave: see this earlier thread for further clues of a cryptic nature (I wasn't able to link to this yesterday due to "internet problems"). But the information was provided by one kind member of this forum, and the test set itself was donated by another. And (as I have already hinted at) all happily came together at that place where strange folk once worked.

Meanwhile ... back to 3-D printing ...

Something new:- Brother ScanNCut.

I'm told that you can "scan any picture, plan or diagram into the CM-900, and the machine will cut it out in many different mediums"!

It's a standalone unit; no PC required. It is designed for cutting card up to 450 gsm, fabric, leather, plastic up to 1.5mm, plywood and MDF.

Sounds like fun!

Has anyone had a go?
