Why are you trying to buy dialysis machines, you should be negotiating a contract for consumables and get the machines free of charge.

Could be difficult if you're a "dealer", though, Neil.

You're right Geoff.
Neil these machines are sent to developing countries, where new ones are unaffordable. If you can get me some free of charge I would gladly take them

When we have a new tender we send the old machines and chairs to Islamic Relief, if you are receiving 'old' machines you still need consumables, instead of just buying consumables, start negotiations to obtain new machines with the consumables.

Yes, you still need consumables ... but charity groups generally rely on donations, and often have to resort to "innovative solutions" such as (dare I say it) cleaning and re-using, and (or) rejuvenating items.

When you retire, Neil ... you could lend a hand. It's not always easy supporting equipment on a zero budget. In fact it's a Whole New World. Interesting, too.

And dialysis is particularly "demanding" (and it's your forte, I know). If only on the water treatment side of things. Why not give it a try later on?

Yes Neil you're totally right, but as Geoff said, cleaning and re-using filters and other consumables is common, at least in very remote areas and usually it is generic ones that are used because their budget is very low. There is many type of generic consumables coming from China...

To answer your question Geoff, I buy all kind of used medical equipment, test it and resell it to brokers in Pakistan, India and the Middle East as well. Then these machines are dispatched locally where there is a demand.
The lower I buy them the lesser I can ask for them. These are not donated because we're not an NGO and only the shipment costs an arm and a leg

Do you ever get to the auctions at Malmesbury? Lots of bargains to be had there. Plus an opportunity to meet a fair number of "dealers" in the markets you mention. Having said that, it's been some years since I last called in (but I imagine you would still encounter a similar crowd).

For what it's worth (probably not a lot) my own approach was to simply give freely of my time in "preparing" the kit to get it into a state worth the trouble of shipping - which would be taken care of by "others" (usually as a charitable gesture by a transportation company, or similar). I always felt (feel) more comfortable leaving the "wheeling and dealing" to others.

The containers went out to countries in Africa, mainly. Sometimes to Eastern Europe or Central America. In another case I recall it went by truck from Karachi all the way up to Kashmir.

Frankly, I enjoyed (enjoy) the challenge of "fixing kit with nowt"*. As John has reminded me recently, we all have our part to play (in other words, do what you can, and play to your strengths). And you also get to meet all sorts of decent people along the way (as well as a few interesting rogues).

* Yorkshire (and various other Points North) for "nothing".

Geoff, when I retire, which hopefully is not that far away I will be leading a quiet life with my family. Medical equipment will be the last thing on my mind.
