I am told there are now various versions of "Das Boot" available in video:- 1) 1981 unreleased version (209 minutes) 2) 1981 original theatrical cut (150 minutes) 3) 1984, 1988 BBC mini series (300 minutes) 4) 1997 "Director's Cut" (208 minutes) 5) 2004 "The Original Uncut Version"* (293 minutes) All of which just serves to remind us how much certain "arty types" like to fiddle about with original material. And why people often say things like:- "it was OK, but not as good as the book"!  * Mini series minus episode-opening flashback scenesForget all the 'arty' stuff, this film is one of the very best ever.. No Hollywood glamour or stars, just very gritty and amazing attention to detail. You can almost smell the fear and everything else. Actually, one of my favourite films is 'The Train'.
That part when Burt Lancaster actually casts and fits a large white metal bearing into the rod end of an axle connecting rod is just amazing and above and beyond what you'd see an actor doing today.. Unbroken film sequence too by the look of it.

A bit like Steve McQueen as Jake Holman, Machinists Mate First Class (US Navy) in "The Sand Pebbles" (1966) . 
Holman enters the engine room after boarding the San Pablo. He looks around the room, smiles and places his hand on the machinery.

These days actors need to be "right-on liberal tree-huggers", and hardly "real men" at all. There again, they probably have to be like that to even get considered for a role!

Watched ' Shawshank Redemption ' for the first time over the weekend... Better late than never! - It's now up there in my top 10. Great film and really enjoyed it! ( I have no idea why it has took me this long to see it! )

I (also) have yet to see that one. I had a mate out in the desert (a Canadian bloke) who was always going on about it, so I must get around to taking a look one day. Meanwhile, I have recently revisited (in quick succession, and in the order shown) "Zulu Dawn" (1979) and "Zulu" (1964) ... about the events of 22/23rd. of January 1879, of course. Two of my all-time favourites*. * But I won't bore you with a list of inaccuracies; not sure why "movie makers" do that - surely the actual events - and the characters involved - were dramatic (not to mention heroic) enough!

Shawshank is a great movie. ...and Xmas day just wouldn't be the same without Zulu.  Colour Sergeant Bourne: It's a miracle.

Well said, that man. And one of the many nice quips (and great acting) in both of the Zulu films. As an aside, anyone with an interest in those times needs to check out David Rattray (who was, by the way, murdered on his farm in Natal eleven years ago now).

It was one of those films where I've only ever caught parts of it when it has been aired on TV. Actually sat down for the full 2 hours 22 minutes with the old projector out and thoroughly enjoyed it. Great actors, great story. I am really enjoying catching up on all of the classics I have missed out on, slowly working my way through the top 100 movies of all time on IMDB. It's actually been quite therapeutic and enjoyable viewing compared to most of the blockbuster drivel that has been released over the last 10 years or so! Must admit, I've never seen either Zulu films Geoff.. Could well be my Sunday movie marathon with a hot chocolate and munchies this weekend!
