Hello fellow Tech's,

We are currently in the process of evaluating,trialing and purchasing 16 Ventilators for the new Heart and Lung Centre at New Cross Hospital in Wolverhampton. We have evaluated 7 different companies / machines and it would be of great assistance if anybody out there has got any comments, good or bad concerning the following:-

Tyco - Puritan Bennett - 840
Viasys - Avea & Vela
Drager -Evita XL - Savina - Oxylog 3000
Profile - Esprit
SLE - Hamilton - Galileo & Raphael
Maquet - Siemens - Servo i
Blease - 9500 & 5500 Transport


Any feedback in regard to reliability, support and training on these machine's would be really helpful.

26 of them in service for over a year...No problems..Excellent Product.

We run 16 Drager Evita 2 Dura (same family as XL
and 4) no problems at all weve had some for a couple of years and do all our own service repair, parts etc always available at reasonable delays. But weve had very few device faults.
The Blease vent is the same as the TAEMA OSIRIS I believe. Same story as above, we only have 1 of these.

Here at the North Staffs, we have around 20 PB840's we trialled the Drager but found them to be too expensive. We've had no problems, and the technical support is excellent as is the manufacturers training that we negotiated with the purchase.

We've got mainly Siemens 300's. Excellent Kit.

We have recently purchased 10 of the Maquet Servo i's. Unfortunately their entry to service was delayed due to the change over in company from Siemens (who we had raised the contract with) and Maquet who took them over. Problems have been resolved but I still have reservations of the support that Maquet will be able to offer

We have 5 Serov 300A's but the servicing is not up to scratch we regularly have to chase up over due servicing for these units. It can be expected as the servicing contracts have just changed hands with siemens taking the monitoring route and maquet taking over the ventilators. I just hope these are more organized.

We've a mix of Siemens 300's and Drager Evitas all serviced in house. No probems with tech support on either and both pretty reliable but admit we haven't had to call Maquet since they've taken over.

One thing you might want to consider is cleaning/disinfection. Our control of infection bods insist the 300's have the expiratory flow transducer disinfected/sterilised after each patient - fair enough - but since these items are individually calibrated to particular machines there is a significant downtime on the vents whilst the parts go through CSSD. The Dragers on the other hand use non specific expiratory valves and and a spare sterile unit can fitted whilst the original is being processed.

Other manufacturers may have a similar system but its worth thinking about

Thankyou all for your comments, they have been most useful.

Why not service them yourselves. They are real easy and a 12 month service can be done in about 2hours. We have four 300's and one servo-i.

Wouldn't consider buying any major piece of kit without a service course thrown in and in the case of the 300's, an extra exp. tranducer too.
