Well, my answer would have to be that many (I'm thinking here more of the management types) have been in the NHS so long that they're out of touch with the "real world"!
At my stage of the game, I have no particular axe to grind, but can simply report that trying to do (even temporary) work in the NHS involves having to jump through all sorts of hoops that private concerns would not even mention. It is not a question of "standards", it's just the "Jobsworth" mentality that often seems to prevail (in any large public organization - of which the NHS is the sole surviving civilian example on a colossal scale). On the other hand, private companies just want you to get the work done!
