Generally these disks restore your PC to it's original settings but keep the contents of 'My Documents' folder in-tact. (Although that's not guaranteed!)
You'd be better off booting from a disc to get your system running, then find a sytem restore point. At least that would allow you to back up your data before doing a full restore.
