One way of approaching such repairs is to have a guy devoted to them. By that I mean a tech, typically a grizzled old veteran (not that I know anyone like that, of course) pottering about at the back of the workshop, and gainfully employed (part-time perhaps) at circuit-level fault finding and repairs. That
can prove to be a cost-effective way of dealing with things.
Meanwhile, the "young bucks" can continue to tear around the hospital, responding to more urgent matters (like impressing the nurses).
