If I may be permitted to loosely define “biomed” as any engineer or technician involved in the engineering support and maintenance of medical equipment of any type, has anybody got a clue how many there are out there? Anyone got any figures for biomeds worldwide, Europe, Aus, UK, USA etc., etc.?

Even more interesting would be a breakdown of all the different sub-species (anaesthesia, laboratory, imaging, radio-therapy etc. equipment) and their genre (in-house, company or contractor service engineer, or whatever), and where they work (armed forces, private hospital(s), public hospital(s), field service, manufacturer, training organization etc. etc.).

Should be enough to be going on with! smile

Eh? What’s that, then?

No, nothing sinister – just “general interest”. smile

Pretty ambitious project. Using North and West Cumbria as a very baseline, 7 techs in 2 major hospitals serving a population of approx 300,000, multiply that up to the population of the UK and we have 1400 hospital techs, add a few fiddle factors, cos we`re a bit understaffed and there`s techs working for private companies, I would guestimate around the 2200 mark.

Dear Geoff,
This is a nice idea. But it looks very difficult and the numbers are increasing day by day, something like world population.
Wish you all the best for your great endeavour.

Maybe that’s the case in beautiful Kerala, Sajeev! But my observations elsewhere would indicate an explosion of equipment inventories (and, one might say, complexities), without the corresponding increase in numbers of technicians. To be honest, I can’t see what’s so difficult about the question I posed. If this forum fails to come up with the ball-park figures, I expect that (given a bit of time) I’ll be able to run them to ground somewhere else on the web. It’s just that I don’t always get a lot of time for research at the moment. smile

Raise your hand if your a BMET.

AAMI might have ballpark figures. I'd say it would be harder to say who is and who isn't. The lines between BMET, IT, IS, and Maintenance (estates) is blurry in these parts.
