Has anyone been affected, or likely to be, by the latest trend of mass redundancies in the NHS to balance the books?

Here in Plymouth we were asked only yesterday if anyone would be interested in taking VOLUNTARY redundancy. Thats band 6 technicians only.

There were persons who expressed an interest IF the terms and conditions were OK. We still wait to hear what the terms are.

Further to my last....... It sounded as if the terms would not be the same or as favourable as the "old Whitley" terms but would be a local package or conncoction depending on just how "broke" the Trust sees itself.

I think this might give you some idea of what's to come:

Personally, I don't know what will happen to our department as it's being "restructured", but job losses haven't been ruled out.

I've never seen so many jobs being advertised at one time, for Technicians working in equipment maintenance, by Medical Physics and EBME departments. All advertised very recently - this implies the demand's there. We have about 30 in our EBME department that's recently been restructured and is in the process of taking on an equipment library function. We have a significant number of over 55s I think - thus 20% of our department would probably be eligible for early retirement if redundancies were imposed. How many work in your department at Stoke (City General, I assume), BSM, and how many do you think are eligible for early retirement, if push comes to shove?

I think the jobs being axed will be ward based. Many trusts are considering reducing elective work to enable ward closures. This has the knock on of reducing ward based staff. As Richard said

Neither have I. The demand for people with our skills is growing. smile

Richard,

I believe we have about 20 technical staff, and only a couple are in the early retirement bracket.

However, it has been reported that approx. 1000 posts will be cut (roughly 1 in 7).

Have a look at the Agenda for Change NHS terms and conditions of service handbook for information regarding Redundancy pay.
