Hi,
Case elements. Still not there though.
1. How much time is wasted by nurses chasing pumps. Audit over 1 week to identify lost time using IV therapy usage form.
2. Benchmark beds to pump ratio. Typical trusts are around 4 beds to 1 pump vol. & syringe even with equipment library. More beds to pump than this & you've got a shortfall.
3. Identify pumps out of support i.e. not only obsolete, but parts no longer available.
4. Standardisation. How much can you do to standardise pumps with investment or are you OK?
5. Finance. Estimate that the library will save at least 50% of nurses time lost based on audit. Add cost of new Clin Eng staff to man it, less reduction in time to find pumps due for service. Add cost of getting room right and effort to sort it. Software - have you got it as part of eqt man software.
Use lost time searching for pump. Allow 50% for earlier discharge of patients - find cost of bed day in your trust.
7. Depending on how it goes, revisit you current preferred suppliers of pumps and discuss plastics - i.e. giving sets and see if you can establish a new contract for 'pumps & plastics' that will provide additional pumps as part of plastics contracts.
Remember, not only do we have get library to work properly we have to save money in the process!!
