The Medical Equipment Library within my Trust is currently under the care of Risk Management. However there is talk of transferring the service through to Cleaners and porters. Is this the same for another Trusts. I must admit, the majority of M.E.L around the country seem to be house within EBME. I would be very grateful for feedback from any resource. confused

Our Library is managed by the EBME dept, probably because it was the EBME dept that suggested the formation of the library in the first place.

Apart from the work done by the Equipment Co-ordinator(currently an A&C grade),the rest of the work(PRM & medical equipment maintenance)is technical. So, for continuity of service(fast turn-around), the EBME dept would appear to be the natural home for the Library.

Cheers
Mark

Hi Sarah,

The Equipment Library here comes under EBME & Tissue Viability. The reason for this being medical devices within the Library (around 300 or so), are all sent to our EBME dept for service repair etc. However, all the Pressure Relieving equipment (120 systems) come under Tissue Viability.

Regards,

Roger…

We manage the Equipmnet Library. We understand the kit and its uses, well more than cleaners or domestics I suspect.

OUR equipment library is under clinical service. I think it is because we do not have EBME department at the moment.

Personal opinion: If any technical job involved, such as PPM, maintenance, repair, then an equipment librarian is more a cleaner or porter. Right?

Does that depend on whether you're grading an equipment librarian for A4C from the view of a manager or a worker?

Basically our technicians collect and deliver devices. On return decontaminate, and do very basic/reset checks, and no obvious faults, so yes they do fall into a cleaner or porter. However, they are also trained in how to set up air mattresses, and are often requested by wards to resolve simple errors.

Hello Sarah.

At our Trust, we are about to start an equipment library. We considered all the possible "homes" for the library and firmly decided on EBME.

Can you use any of these arguments:
1. Medical (electrical) equipment and cleaning confused ,
2. Electrical safety checks boggle ,
3. Set-up configurations for infusion devices rolleyes ,
4. Staff training eek ,
5. etc. ninja

No disrepect to porters or cleaners (they are surely needed!), but have you seen the state of hospital walls/ corridors! In our Trust, most equipment control numbers may be found "in-printed" in our new plaster board walls!

As with the other e-mail replies, EBME is the best home for the equipment library.
