As Louis pointed out earlier, the use of mobiles phones on commercial aircraft IS against the law, eek this is because it MAY interfere with the electronic control systems, obviously somebody somewhere had enough evidence to obtain an international law banning the use of these blighters. Surely, my friends, if it is acknowledged that these beasties interfere with the aircraft's circuits then surely the same applies to electronic medical equipment. confused confused

Louis,
I don't think that you are comparing the proverbial 'apples with apples'. mad I think the main issue aboard aircraft is with various nav/comms systems, all of which receive e.m signals in order to process + provide information as their primary function. As such, it is more difficult to give them broad spectrum e.m immunity without reducing device sensitivity, and therefore adequate functionality. (Even if the aircraft is on the ground, a momentary signal of high field strength may be enough to de-sensitize a radio receiver so that the pilot misses/misinterprets a vital piece of info).

Nearly all medical devices on the other hand do not have such a need to use e.m. radiation as part of their inherent function, and should have a degree of e.m. immunity, as well as not being an emitter.
This CE requirement has become more stringent in recent years, and modern devices fairly immune (it is the antique, microprocessor based kit that is perhaps of most concern, since they were not built with e.m immunity in mind). Hopefully natural evolution will weed out thos most vulnerable (except if us biomeds manage to keep patching them up and sending them out again)

Can I respectfully deduce that you are an army bod, and not an RAF one? laugh

A minor point of interest. Another reason why mobile usage is banned on aircraft. The signal from your handset will be transmitted to several base stations at once. Apparantly causes a hell of a mess on the mobile networks: Major lockups.

There is another reason too why using mobiles on planes was disliked and supposedly banned and that was because of the billing situation for the calls. Because of the speed, many different stations were getting caught up in the billing and it too was very messy to try to sort out.

What goes on about the new TETRA radio system, that the police and soon all emergency services are to be using, this system uses more power (upto 5W) and a different band (around 420MHz) than cellular phones (using 900+ MHz)

Has any dept done any testing with TETRA to see if any devices are prone to interference ?

Tetra is mentioned in the latest document and is given a medium risk.
