Bobbyp,
your naivety is very refreshing. What a Trust charges must be down to a local management decision as to what is reasonable coupled to local pressures on parking in the area of the hospital. So its not likely to be the same everywhere is it. We are currently expected to pay a fee of £30 annually if full-time staff regardless of salary but this is likely to be reviewed upwards eventually. For all those who do not pay at present unless they live on a Scottish island it can't be long before they are asked to pay something. I did a Falfield course with two Londoners and was surprised when they both said they could not live without their cars. Public transport being so good in London. So if Londoners cannot be convinced to get rid of their cars there is not much hope for the rest of the country is there. Parking charges are here to stay so better get used to them.

Isn't Inland Revenue involved here somewhere, free parking being seen as a benefit in kind and as such taxable ?

An employer is not obliged to offer car parking provision for the employee, free or otherwise.

Having said that, if you are an essential car user (read your terms of employment) the employer is obliged to meet any additional costs accrued carrying out your lawful work.

If you are a field service engineer who requires a vehicle for their work, any additional costs are paid by their employer, which is passed on to the customer, either in increased contract costs or added to the bill.

Free at WXUHT at the moment, but I couldn't care less, because I walk the 2.7 miles to work, so they ain't gettin' no money from me! :p

You might laugh but when I first left college I attended a interview where the employer was only expecting to provide me with just a switch room to work in and they'd send me on a one day train course, most other things like tools and test equipment I'd have to purchase myself. I think the manager had been a plumber and expected other trades to work similar. Surprisingly I didn't go for that job.

As for parking the trust I work for only provides limited parking and you need a very good excuse to get it. They do provide payment of park and ride fees out of salary and I'm not sure but I think the council provide a discount if purchased yearly. Only thing is I live on the other part of town and that park and ride is owned by another council and they wouldn't have anything to do with the scheme. frown

Although the department also performs work for the adjacent trust and I've been sent down there with free parking. Only thing is the old park and ride I use to go to was half the distance between my home and the hospital, so what I gained on free parking I'm probably loosing on extra petrol costs! mad
