Hi All,

I would like to ask a sensible question if I may, it is regarding the above title.

As an MTO2 grade Bio Med Engineer, is there anywhere I can find out exactly what an MTO2 bio med engineer is expected to do .(ie responsibilities)
Also what an MTO3 is meant to do,I cannot seem to find anywhere on the web what is Expected of each grade! anyone have any ideas!

If your HR department can't provide you with a description ( which is probaly the case), I'm sure I saw good descriptions on the IPEM Website....

In Whitley vernacular An MTO2 performs a broader and/or more demanding range of work activities. Supervision of other MTO's may be expected at this level. Other MTO's being 1's or ATO's.

I dont know how many establishments keep to the letter of Whitley probably the bigger Med Physics depts. We have in the past used a 2 as a training post. Our Librarians are ATO's and do minor maintenance, safety checks etc.

Perhaps somebody has some guidance on the use of star points?

The grade naturally relates to the pay scale but as some jobs that some groups of MTOs do is more complex that others, the pay and hence the grade varies. Also hospitals in London (and I expect other large cities)who find it hard to recruit due to the high cost of living also tend to put people on higher grades. Why are all the perfusionists I know on MTO5 grade when they are not managers? It the fact that they can demand these high salaries due to shortages of staff? or is the job so complex they deserve them?
These guide-lines will necessarily be just that and not hard and fast rules. Market forces have taken over from an ideal national plan that was unworkable in reality.

Here is my rule of thumb (Diclaimer! This is based on reality and experience and not official guidelines eek ):
MTO2 needs to be supervised and trained frown
MTO3 can work alone on routine tasks smile
MTO4 works on more complex tasks where there is no background and uses experience and knowledge cool
MTO5 manages the section/department confused
I have not employed an MTO1 in a Central London hospital, no-one will or can afford to work for that wage. This is one of the problems of a national set pay scale.

May be you should be. confused But that it what has to be paid to get people to work in central London. eek
You have the advantage of journey times of less than an hour and a half and the fresh smell of cow sh** to wake you rather than car fumes.

With all this excessive travelling time Robert, maybe you should do the same as the ex - Minister for Health, and resign to spend more time with your family.

Oops, I forgot, resigning in his case means you still get paid your obscene salary you just have less committment, I wonder why he never had this clause built in to AfC. eek eek

Get a job nearer home well that would ne nice. wink I am still waiting for the advert to appear. Unforunately I will have to keep travelling. frown
I think there is a faster turn over of staff in London so the jobs come up more frequently - where as the country bumkins know when they are on to a good thing and stick in post. I do not blame you in the slightest.
On a serious note, it does highlight the problem we will have setting universal grades when it comes to AfC. Unless London (and southeastern and large city) weighting goes up to the £5k that a fiend of mine in a bank gets - and he still says it is too little.
Ho hum... and we still come to work for the NHS so it can not be all that bad. cool

Robert

But then again the feel of sand in the toes, the sunshine, the camels.......
