Aah, come off it Roy, I don't believe you're that naive - of course the AfC bods knew that many were likely to be compromised in the bigggest pay-cutting excercise in Europe. It's just that they had to have some insurance to stop many of the "non-key staff" from leaving in droves. The key staff are the ones who don't lose out because they don't need a R&R premium - the ones that will train the cheaper labour that comes in straight from University to replace those "non-key staff" lost by "not-so natural wastage" as a result of AfC.

I have received a letter from Amicus informing of progress for maintenance craftsmen with regard afc banding. At one hospital (I believe an early implementer site)the trust has agreed to train the craftsmen and grade then as mechanical technicians which puts then onto band 4. This band 4 gives then a slight pay rise and on top of that, the increase of the on-call pay rates give then another slight rise. What I find interesting is that on top of these small increases they have also been awarded a RRP of approx £2700 as well. This has resulted in a pay increase of over £3000. I thought the RRP was to up your pay level if your new grading is below your current pay, ie a form of pay protection but this is obviously not the case. This new pay scale according to the union letter has been accepted and implemented.

No-one planning to follow the example of that PhD scientist in the paper, who's packed research in to become a gas fitter since it pays better, then?

I think papajos comments ( 20 Feb ) are dreadfull! I get job satisfaction, I love my job! I just wish I could recieve a living wage! Everything is going up, food, petrol, utility bills etc. ect. and I am just not keeping up with it all. Job satisfaction does not pay the council tax. Join the real world Papajo.

Herbal, If you feel that strongly about your wages then the answer is simple :- Leave. Too many people seem quite happy to complain about the way thing are being run but are unwilling to put their head above the parapet and do something about it. I am sorry if this post offends some people but if you are unhappy with something try to change it.
