Do you not feel that some of the big medical companies should be putting some money in somewhere, as alot of them employ (nick!)staff which benefited from the experience and training of EBME department and the like.?

I would say that companies rely to a great extent on individuals that obtained the skills, experience and training within the NHS and that manufacturers attracted them by offering a better "package" or prospects. Product specific training is one thing that can be provided by manufacturers and as this is a large proportion of the on-the job training provided by the NHS. Perhaps the NHS and manufacturers need to coordinate product-based technical training such that it's only provided by manufacturers using professionally accredited training packages that are formally assessed.

Hey Karl, it seems that we have made similar observations of modern British youth, you and I. wink

But as regards who's going to be doing the work (and, believe me, the actual work will still be there) in ten years time, well, all I can say Mate is that you haven't been paying attention! As I've mentioned a couple of times already, it will be done by willing hands from Eastern Europe (after all, we're all good Europeans now, you know). smile

Hello people,

Not sure if I can help with any info but i'm currently a Trainee Medical Engineer at Chesterfield. I was taken on with an ND in Electrical & Electronic Engineering, and was subsequently put through the HNC course. As a result of A4C it looks like i will be put a degree course of somekind. As part of that i'm currently studying an Anatomy & Physiology unit at Notts Peoples College. Next year (Hopefully, i'm told) there will be a Clinical Engineering Degree done there through DeMontford University. Although I don't have much info on that at the min.

My tranining has basically been as you described earlier. Formal qualifications of ND/HNC, Manufacturing Training Courses, In-house training (If thats what you call it, Matt!), and on-the-job experience.
