Hello Colleagues,
Did anyone try to have a look at the new City & Guilds accredited e-learning qualification launched in Feb this year. See previous topic mail. I would be interested in any views (good or bad).

Anyway, for further details contact: clpu@sysha.nhs.uk

I have taken liberty of sending all suppliers contact details to C&G for them to consider this as a training option for their specific devices.

ALSO

I would like to make you all aware of an article I have recently had published with prof David Upton a colleague of mine. It reviewed all received litigation claims involving infusion related claims to the NHS. I am in the process of getting reprints and would be happy to share.

Drop me a line if you would like a copy.

Best wishes

Chris

I have looked at the course and have the following observations:
1. You have to register your establishment as an accredited learning centre to be able to conduct the course at considerable cost. Alternatively, find a place that is registered.
2. The course needs to be undertaken by 10 to 20 people at one time and it lasts for 12 to 16 weeks (if the participants can spare the time).
3. An assessor has to be appointed, preferably with clinical experience and practice, and has preferably completed the course themselves.
4. An input from IT is required to set up the necessary databases etc.
5. Only practising nurses in Trusts can partake in the full programme. Anyone else can complete certain parts of the course but cannot do the clinical part.
6. What relevance does a City & Guilds have in today's environment?

I think all of the above points need to be assessed carefully before considering this course.

I have looked in depth at this course, my major concern , I'm afraid is the fundamental floor in this training course:

The course is specifically for one type of infusion pump, but then the certificate is assumed to be transferable between different Trusts, who will more often than not have different equipment.

The course is then sold as being CNST compliant, the CNST assesors will be looking at equipment specific training.

As a Medical Devices Trainer, I am currently not interested in this package.

Chris,
You mention an article on received litigation claims for infusion devices in the NHS - sounds very interesting, and I'd very much like to have a copy, if you're sharing.
Unfortunately I just tried to email you at the address you have registered with ebme.co.uk and had a 'mail-delivery-failed' automatically sent to me.

Many Trusts already run training programmes, but if suppliers could be persuaded to configure their training format leading to a G&G qualification, I believe this would be more benefit to trusts and attract greater uptake.
We currently run monthly infusion devices study days (which are device specific and hands on) I approached our supplier some weeks ago with this suggestion but they said they have no immediate plans to change but would be watching the future of G&G e learning programme with great interest.

Firstly I would be ineterested in the article as well please. Could it be put up on this site?

I have had a go at the CLPU module accessed through the South Yorkshire HA website.
At the end there was no useful information about how to proceed to the City and Guilds part(s) and so far it doesn't look like there is an infrastucture to support learners at this hospital at least.
One of the people I contacted who is invetsigating it for me said that the cost would be about £60 per person doing the C&G course but there was nothing about who would be paying it; the hospital or the learner.

There are no references that I could see that have been used to back up particular points of view within the module. There are statements about best practice, one example is doing hourly observations on all infusions, but I am not aware of the origin of some of the statements.

We have a new learning management system in use in this hospital that (when it is working) could be used to access elearning like this but it doesn't seem to be possible to link directly to the CLPU stuff as a separate registration and login is required.
Are there any plans to make the module(s) available for import into hospital elearning environments to make co-ordination with the C&G parts easier to achieve?

I haven't seen anything about whether a refresher would be needed once someone has achieved the certificate from C&G and if so at what frequency. I am currently trying to achieve a two year refresher rate (failing miserably in the main) driven by the CNST requirements I believe.

I love the idea of a national training system that is transferrable.
I love the idea of elearning modules but I have come across a fair number of nursing staff who are either uninterested in using computers for learning or have discovered that the computer systems just aren't up to it.

Hello Steven,

The course code is 7354, go to the city and guilds site and you will find student handbooks et all.

The price: £100 registration with NHS core learning unit and £50 registration with City and guilds per participant.

The course can only be run in premises which are City and guilds approved.

The course needs to be supported by a member of staff in the hospital who has attended the course, not as there are only 3 centers in the UK
currently running the course:

014511 MERTON COLLEGE, LONDON 0208 4086411
MORDEN PARK LONDON ROAD MORDEN SM4 5QX Y

ST JAMES'S UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL, LEEDS 0113 2 433144 ST JAMES'S UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL BECKETT STREET LEEDS LS9 7TF

SANTY LTD & UNIVERSITY COLLEGE HOSPITAL TRUST
08451 555 000
SANTY LTD - TRNG & DEVELOPMENT
2ND FLOOR, WEST WING 250
EUSTON ROAD LONDON NW1 2PQ Y

From the initial group of 10 pilot sites, none have adopted the course.

The course appears to have a fundamental floor; students are only trained in one manufactures pump. This is not adequate for CNST.

This is very concerning as staff will believe they are competent with all devices, a problem when moving to another trust and using another manufactures device.

I don't mean to sound speptical, it just doesn't seem that appealing!!!!

I think a strong argument in the litigation vs training, would be found by looking at the litigation cases currently being investigated by your own trust, this information is avaiable in public trust board meetings!!
