So what do bio-eng types like to drive? smile

For the past four years I've been alternating between an '87 Volvo 740 estate (never quits!) :p and a '98 620ti... (factory hotrod!) eek . But, between 1996 and 2001, I ran a '72 Ford Pinto fitted with a 5.7 Ford V8 as my regular inter-hospital transport. laugh It was so much fun, just don't ask me to stop or turn! Even got featured in the Daily Record with it in '98! shades

Respect for driving a Ford Pinto!! However, to change to a Volvo (automatic disregard of ALL other road users, especially motorbike riders) and a Rover 620ti (great engine, crap handling) you must have had a mid-life crisis of monumental proportions!!?

The Pinto was all '68 Mustang running gear with no interior and massive rear slot mags. It handled just fine with air in the tyres. Sold to one of my boys in here who promptly crashed it as he didn't know how to turn a corner in a rear wheel drive car!!

As for the Volvo, I needed a cheap hauler after my divorce but it owes me nothing so it gets to stay. Your right about Volvo drivers, believe me its no myth! I can get away with anything and all people do is shake their head and muse "poor old sod, he can't help it, Volvo driver y'know..." I do watch out for bikers as I rode Honda 4's for years and was knocked off myself several times....

The Rover is my lady's car and it sticks to the road like glue, but the only downside is the violent torque steer...

Mid-life? No problemo, what do you think all the guns are for!!!

Clock's ticking John, just do it!

As an alternative, how about a mid 80's C4 Corvette.. 5.7V8, targa roof, 245bhp, 30(yes,30)mpg, simple servicing and easy to obtain parts all for £5k-£8k...

I always fancied an MB/M201 Jeep, but the prices are insane for a decent one..

You could have put a bid in for Inspector Morse's refurbished Jag MkII. It only went for £110,000 to a private bidder!!!

Every knows Aston Martins are the best-looking cars around. They sound fantastic. So what if they only do 12 mpg. You get to drive around pretending you are James Bond. What other car has such icon status, maybe three red, white and blue mini coopers.

Once I climb down lottery winning dream cloud. I dive a Toyota Celica form 1992 which some ASBO yob stole the radio and the tools out of the boot last month. When I say tools, I mean the tyre iron, jack and safety triangle.

A.M cool

Everybody also knows that I run around in a F-reg Bedford Rascal with rust in all the usual places. These little vans are great, cheap, nippy around town, small enough to park etc. etc. And very practical for moving equipment about. Can’t see the point in having anything decent in Modern Britain, and I’m not really in to “street cred”, as you can probably tell! Despite all that, it was still smashed into by some ***hole and all my tools and test equipment stolen. And I’m talking about electronics toolkits, multimeters, insulation testers, power supplies and the like. I’ve had more stuff pinched in the two years I’ve been back in the UK (one burgled flat, and the van broken into as above), than I had for the whole of my life up to that point. What’s going on here? frown

Geoff, My £200 Volvo 740 auto estate, is a full 6' 3" in the load area, tall enough for cooking in, and also has three substantial basements in back for tools, test gear etc, sos they aren't on view. It turns on the street like an FX4 taxi, and never, ever quits.. It also takes me on 1500mile round trip camping holidays to Kent ever year. I never service it apart from a summer oil change... Parking? Not a problem!

Point is, I can haul as much as any van but my tools etc are always out of sight under the rear floor. If the van's not working out, go for a late (under £800) model 940 wagon, you'll wonder how you ever managed without it! One time I even managed to fit THREE examination couches (two dismantled) in there with the tailgate closed!

I drive an Audi A4 estate automatic, don't use it for work but the wife finds it very useful for her many shopping trips!!! Next car will be a Smart, I would like to see the wife cram all her shopping in that.

Used to have a Volvo 240 estate but the wife nagged it wasn't very street cred for the school run. Now I wonder where competition to have the latest gadgets that school kids have comes from? Only kidding, the car finally clapped out (not bad for a 20+ year old car with over 200K on the clock).
