Hello guys and gals,

I nearly got caught out by a conman this week, who offered me £3000 (by E mail) to buy my SV650S Suzuki. I thought it was a bit fishy, so I called Motorcycle News, who advised me that there is a scam involving bankers drafts. See below. eek (By the way - I still have a low mileage 3yr old Suzuki for sale @ £2850 if you're interested) smile

Help stop the conmen (Motorcycle News) http://www.motorcyclenews.com/nav?page=m...-EXTRA_SECURITY

Conmen are trying to make thousands from those of us selling our bikes – and it's time for us to join together and hit back.
Read this story and pass on the details to every motorcyclist you know (send it as a link if you prefer).
Detective Constable Tim Hinks of the Met Police’s economic and specialist crime unit says getting the information to as wide an audience as possible is the key to beating the con.
The fraud works like this. First, a potential buyer contacts you and agrees a price for your bike – but only by email. They never want to meet or talk on the phone.
Then he tells you he’ll send a cheque and have someone pick up the bike. The cheque arrives – but it’s for more than the amount you agreed. The conman then asks you to pay in the cheque, wait for it to clear – and then send back the over-payment by Western Union. Sounds very trusting of them, doesn't it?
Trouble is, the cheque never clears and the Western Union payment can never be traced – leaving you out of pocket. They don’t bother coming to get the bike – they don’t need to, they’ve already made their cash.
We’ve tried reeling in one of these conmen – and gone so far as getting them to send us a cheque. But DC Hinks says there’s little that can be done to snare the conmen because the cheque is a fake.
“A busy bank will pay the cheque into your account and within 36 hours it appears as ‘cleared funds’. You’ll then send off the excess by Western Union – which takes your funds immediately. When the bank discovers the fraud it’s too late for you – and you lose out.
On the next page we list the emails we received from this scam artist. If you get anything similar – ignore them or forward them to tim.hinks@met.police.uk

In my experience, anything that involves payment to/from Western Union is likely to be a variation of the well-kmown "Nigerian scam" that continues to operate in various market sectors (ie, certainly not just motor-bikes). The "over-payment" cheque trick is also very well known. You should be OK using eBay, though, especially if insisting on payment by PayPal. Bottom line is that anything that sounds a bit complicated is almost certainly a scam. Never trust anybody! frown

I had experience on eBay of a 'church representative' in New York wanted the item I was selling sent to a Pastor in good old Nigeria. Payment was allegedly made via Paypal and a reasonably convincing looking email from 'Paypal' to confirmed this. Being the suspicious type I forwarded the suspect email to spoof@paypal.co.uk and within a minute my suspicions were confirmed.
Both Ebay and Payal offer excellent services if you are in the least bit suspicious of communications. My advise is make good use of them.

Had the same email when selling parts from my GSXR 750 in the summer. I reported it to ebay knowing (or suspecting) it was a scam.

Also received the spoof Paypal mail this week, asking me to "confirm" all of my details including password, bank details etc. Sent that on to Paypal too!!

The was the Paypal one was set up you can see how people could be caught out!

You have to be very wary of paypal too I'm afraid.
It is possible to buy the bike via paypal, take it away and then claim the money back upto a month afterwards. have a look at http://www.paypalsucks.com/ for some real horror stories.
nothing to beat good old fashioned cash!

I would offer to buy your bike, but my wife is trying to cut my stock down (down to 7 now).

As a rule of thumb I always wait at LEAST ten working days weeks to clear a cheque, my bank like others, will credit my account the instant the cheque is lodged.
