Mindray to Acquire Datascope's Patient Monitoring Business
Well, they have been building them for Datascope for a while.

At the price they are paying, it seems like a good bit of business.

Here's more, for anyone who may be interested (that nice building is Datascope's headquarters in Mahwah, New Jersey, by the way).

I wonder if they have much low-life out in Shenzhen? smile

Geoff, thanks for the link.

Mindray should be able to leverage Datascope to a much bigger international position. But they'll need to do some meaningful innovation to grow much beyond Datascope's present size.

Lower prices don't count for a whole lot here in the US.

That's not the case here in the UK, thankfully. It's interesting to hear your State-side take on issues like this, though, Tim.

Here, Penlon have been sticking their badge on Mindray monitors. I wonder if the new acquisition will affect that arrangement? smile

You seem to have better access to your medical device markets than we do over here. The established vendors dominate here, aided and abetted by the Group Purchasing Organizations.

Consequently, innovation is low.

"Group Purchasing Organizations"? What are they ... a bit like package holiday bucket shops (bulk purchasing to obtain maximum margin)? No, we don't have that in the UK (as far as I am aware), and I don't think we want it either! But there again, what about your famous "Anti-Trust Laws" ... don't they come into play when those well-known companies dominate (as you say)? smile

Afraid we do have Group Purchasing here Geoff in the form of National Contracts. In the Scottish version, you cannot buy any item that's not on a NC if an equivalent is on a contract. So lets say you want a defib that is not on the contract, you would have to have an exceptional reason for doing so and I suspect that exceptional reason still won't be enough.

I just hope that some sort of competitive evaluation gets done before kit gets placed on those lists, then. The thought occurs that maintenance and technical services could (should?) be procured in a similar fashion. That is nationally, across the board, on three or five year contracts. That would make for some interesting bidding! smile
