Dear All,

We have an MRI compatible S5 Datex Ohmeda monitor, which is used in the MRI room. We now have a requirement to monitor Invasive pressures during MRI scans (using Edwards Lifesciences pressure transducers)

Does anyone have any experience in this?

I would like to Know:

Do we need special MRI compatible transducer interface leads?

Would we need MRI compatible Edwards pressure transducers, or are the ordinary ones used?

Is a special pressure bag used?

Paul,
The advantage of IBP is that the transducer etc does not have to be near the patient. The easiest thing to do is to have a long fluid line and keep the electrical parts outside the high magnetic field.
This will lead to some damping of the signal but it is the simplest answer.

Again if it is as far away as the transducer it does not need to be MRI compatible.

I have been up to our MRI room and have looked at the practicalities of siting the pressure transducer out of the high magnetic field area around the MRI magnate. Even by using our longest tube length as used in theatres, there is not sufficiant tube length to allow the patient to travel through the magnate.

Edwards Lifesciences have tested thier pressure transducers up to 1.5 Teslars (which is ok for us) but do not market an MRI compatible transducer cable. They have suggested disconnecting the transducer during the scan, but as the patient may be in the scanner for 30 mins.plus, this wouldn't be acceptable for us.

I have spoken to Datex, and as far as they are aware there are MRI compatible cables out there. Can anyone suggest any other manufacturer who markets a practicle solution to monitoring Invasive Pressure during MRI scans?
