Disease from the pig? I was over-joyed to see two fat porkers happily munching away (and apparently free to roam) at the side of the road in the New Forest only the other day.

Those "avian" flu's are only brought about by the over-crowded rearing conditions employed in places like S.E.Asia. As usual, it's man (and his greed) that is the real problem.

I thought it was brought about by greedy idiots feeding bits of sheep to cattle! You're getting Modern Britain confused with "Animal Farm", Eddie. Although, there are many similarities. Only these days it's the sheep that are "led" by those with their snouts in the trough.

Meanwhile, the cattle don't get a look in. Mainly due to the fact that there are so few left (a minority community). Again, thanks to a disgusting idiot who not only sparked off the last (horrendous) round of F&M, but also profited by it.

Note the common theme: greed. An ugly characteristic, most would agree ... but for some perverse reason, one that's seemingly celebrated in Modern Britain.

I called in at Watford Gap motorway services just the other day. It looks to me like it hasn't seen much maintenance since 1959 (when it became the first one of its kind in the UK). Now it's the giant pothole that you have to navigate as you're trying to rejoin the carriageway that has become the tourist attraction!

Later that same day I was chatting with a bloke at yet another motorway services area (the infamous South Mimms on the M25 ... who "designs" these hideous places?), and he mentioned that he also had never ventured north of said Gap! So the "mad cow" in question is clearly not alone.

Yes, Mate ... I did in fact guess what you were on about. Don't forget that a lot of those jerks inhabit their own cosy (not to mention privileged) little world. I wouldn't mind that so much, if only they shut up trying to tell those of us who grind away "beyond the Pale" of the "Westminster Village" how to live our lives (and, even worse, applying their own narrow anal-retentive values to the greater world). Frankly I despise the whole lot of them.

Looks like they've had their first big bang at the LHC! Unfortunately for them it wasn't the cosmic variety but instead the sort that involves magnets melting, circuit breakers resetting and the summoning of the Geneva firebrigade.

Looks like the end of the world will be on hold for just a while!
