Our training and development team have adopted Training Tracker as an e-learning tool for things like induction training. Does anyone know of any trusts using it for medical device training? I've set up a module for the Graseby 500 pump and linked the questions to our clinical competency

I would also like to know if anyone is using a different package, and how well the training is recieved.

Many thanks

Welcome to the forum, Karen.

Perhaps you may like to expand on this "e-learning" business. In the hospital setting, what's wrong with the traditional "class room" (or even on-the-job) approach to training?

Also, what is "Training Tracker"? A database containing a list of names with dates attended (and due) for each item of relevant training, presumably. smile

Hi Geoff
Thanks for the welcome.
Nothing wrong with classroom and on the job training. We've trained over 500 staff in the last 5 months on infusion pumps, and some other devices. We have also set up workbooks and drop-in sessions. e-Learning is just another tool in our armoury, especially where staff were trained a couple of years ago and just need an update, or work nights and can't get to training easily.

Training Tracker (www.trainingtracker.co.uk) is an online authoring software with a Learning Management database behind it. You create a series of slides and then at the end you can set up a series of questions and a pass mark. Apparently 60 NHS Trusts have signed up to it, and you can swap modules between organisations.

Hope this clarifies things...

Karen

may I ask how your Trust became involved in 'trainer-tracking' ? I am trying to find a solution to the (apparent) complete lack of training in my Trust (1000 beds) and with the timeframe given (by the MD) to achieve compliance with S4BH C4b, any assistance would be appreciated - as it is just me, myself and I to train all staff... (and sort the CAS safety alerts)

thanks to you all for your helpful comments on this site, it is frustrating to me that all other hospitals are going through similar situations without the opportunity of sharing our ideas - I hate re-inventing the wheel!!

One wonders, what with the hitherto "complete lack of training", how your esteemed Trust managed to avoid total catastrophe before you arrived on the scene!

Can we assume that you're talking about user continuation training on common items of medical equipment ... infusion pumps, NIBP monitors, pulse oximeters and such?

Forgive me if I sound unkind, but I don't understand what prevents you from sharing ideas. Am I missing something here?

Meanwhile, in my experience, there's nothing wrong with "re-inventing the wheel" ... but only if the situation actually needs such drastic action to be taken (as it sometimes does). Building a better mouse trap is another metaphor that springs (oh yes, a pun!) to mind. smile

Hi Sally
Our academy was using training tracker and I was invited to use it.

I know the feeling about me, myself and I. I started this job in July last year and there was nothing in place. Alot of training was happening but nothing documented. Given that we had a much publicised death in the hospital due to an epidural infusion http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/wiltshire/7226836.stm, it was imperative that MDT was put in place.

I've sent you private message, so if you want to have a chat, give me a ring.

Kind regards

Karen

In my humble opinion, the case you mention had very little to do with equipment training. But I suspect that "the equipment" once again got the blame, as it's more comfortable all round if that's the case. Except for the victim ... er, patient and the patient's family, that is.

I suspect that the vast majority of so-called "incidents" are not, in fact, due to equipment malfunction, or even lack of user training, but more likely due to employing idiots in the first place, then letting them practice unsupervised in the second. frown

Hi Karen,
Going back to your original query. We have been running training programmes for equipment users (mainly nurses & AHP's) for some years. The trust has recentently adopted the tracker for training doctors about manual handling, clinical governance, infection control etc.. Doctors are given a month to complete the training.
We have also struggled to capture doctors and are currently looking to set up an induction programme using the tracker and would be interested to see your programme.
My colleague (clinical equipment trainer) is also doing some work for THOTH. I will send you PM about her contact details.

Apologies if this has already been posted.

Wondering why you are left in such a dismay state. Don't you have vendors who are qualified to do the in-service support for all the clinical staff.

Make the impossible POSSIBLE. I know we all can and it is the wisdom to distinguish one from the other.
