We are in the process of installing a new OPG machine
(Digital Panoramic X-Ray Machine). Can any one advice us the advantages of using a UPS over stebilised Power Supply for this unit.

Yes ... it means that the unit doesn't crash when the power gets interrupted! smile

In our part most of the x-ray units are connected in normal power
hence our Electrical engineering is asking for explanation. As per them the installation cost for normal power is Rs.1000/KVA compared with of Rs.10,000/KVA for UPS in addition to power corruption. This unit require 4KVA UPS.so it is question of cost incurred for UPS weighed against the benefit it offers.

Naturally, major x-ray equipment cannot be backed by a UPS system. The load would be far too great! But essential (volatile) elements within each system can be battery-backed. Why not?

Am I right in assuming that the machine in question is based around a PC? That is, it has to "boot up", and all the rest? Is that why you are considering a UPS?

So, ask your Electrical Engineering people to guarantee that the power will never be interrupted! How many times has that happened over the last year (month, 24 hours)?

As usual, I would advise as follows:- if the hospital cannot afford the technology, then why are they considering it at all?

However, perhaps with a bit of careful engineering, you could protect (by UPS) the essential elements (the PC) of the system, and let the rest (the high power side) go hang, as usual! frown

Dear Sir,
Thanks for your reply
The equipment in question is Orthophos XG 5 Digital Panoramic X-Ray Unit. We have ordered non integrated PC based unit. PC is a separate unit. This unit is with CCD technology sensor to capture the images and send it to a computer console digitaly. Our electrical engineering department is ready to give UPS only to PC not to rest of the unit.We feel that since it is a sensitive digital machine and in between the scan if power goes patient needs to undego the radiation again, it is better to connect the system to UPS.Do you have any other points to consider?

That's the case with all x-ray examinations, is it not?

So, as an OPG examination is not quite in the same league as CT or MRI, on this occasion (and upon balance) I feel I must rule in favour of your Electrical Engineers! As I have already suggested (and now you're saying they agree), protect just the PC part of the system by UPS!

But (at least by way of an interesting technical investigation), why not see if there is a simple method of battery backing the detector CCD's? In fact, can we be sure that they don't hold their charge for a few seconds (or whatever) anyway?

OK ... next case, please! smile

Dear Sir
Exposure time in normal X-ray unit is approximately 1-2sec but in an OPG it is approximately 15 Sec and there is a chance that it may happend twice between a power failure (due to generator change over).

What about CT (not to mention MRI)? How do you manage that?

Sorry, Sajeev ... there's no Court of Appeal here! wink

Stand alone UPS with 30 minute back up ( 80-120 KVA)
