How about keeping things simple? For instance:- 1) How many bits of kit awaiting repair? 2) How many bits of kit awaiting spares? 3) How many PM's outstanding? (each as a percentage of the total inventory, if you like). ... and stuff like that? Any well-run department should have all information like that available at the touch of a button, anyway.
If you don't inspect ... don't expect.

Greetings, what aspect of the department are you going to audit as the approach would be quite different if you were looking at, for example, turnround times as opposed to adherence to "policy XYZ". If you could clarify, I may be able to assist.
Thoughts and information provided on this forum are mine and mine alone and do not necessarily reflect the policy of NSW Health. They may also be complete bollocks!!

Your asset management programme should have all the required data you need, if all the data has been uploaded first, garbage in = garbage out.

We too regularly undertake internal audits checking out the procedures in place, technicians knowledge of them and that the systems in place work. Always fun. Pop me a pm and I can give you our QA Managers Email.

Dave C in Oz is right of course.
It does all depend on what you want to audit, the facility in general, adherence to policy or the QMS, guidelines and regulatory matters or performance, you might just want the numbers, good old KPIs against SLAs etc.
These days, as Geoff suggests I tend to keep these things as simple as possible, I use a one for all format, a basic traffic light document, regardless of area, activity or function, you just fill in the blanks to suit.
Red - Quite a failure here Amber - Can do better, improvements required Green - OK
A section for Comments and any data collected and thats about it really
Specifics are noted - remedial actions/plans to be completed are agreed by date and by whom
Drop me a line if you would like a copy

Facility in general? ... Does anyone have a format to carry out an internal audit on an EBME department? Traffic lights sounds a bit ... er, "monkey see, monkey do" to me, Mate. Or is this all part of the general dumbing down of everything I see around me (in the UK, that is)? In my humble opinion, internal audits (that is, of biomed sheds) are just so much wasted time. Far better to spend that time cracking on and getting the work done! Keeping an eye (and a grip) on things is something that should be done continuously and automatically anyway. Why do you need (yet another) sheet of paper with boxes to tick? If a department really wants to hear the good news ... they should call in an independent assessor from outside. A bit obvious, I would have thought.
If you don't inspect ... don't expect.
