Looks like an interesting couple of days, Brian. But for those sort of prices I guess I shall need to content myself with ... er, private study! frown

I can always arrange a little private study, but that tends to be even more expensive, unless of course you happen to be blond, 38-24-38 and under 25!

Sorry, Brian ... but (as far as I'm concerned) that's definitely a case of "three strikes and you're out"! smile

Geoff, dont you think that we took a wrong turn somewhere, instead of working on the kit we could just talk about it and get paid a lot more without the responsibility that it works?

(with apologies to Brian)

Those who can, do; those who can't, teach.*

- George Bernard Shaw

Those who can't teach, teach the teachers!

- Laurence J. Peter

Those who can, do; those who can't, attend conferences!

- Me

... I've no real regrets, Neil. If some poor person somewhere gets some benefit out of a bit of kit that I've fixed, that's probably reward enough. Similarly if someone gets some use out of something I've written (in computer code) that would otherwise have been out of reach (due to cost), then that's OK too. But yes, some financial reward would also be nice. smile

* What this really means, of course, is that failures from other fields often find refuge in the school (or university etc.) environment. What's that lovely word ... tenure? Yes ... but there's an even sweeter phrase ... it's called "research grant"!

Geoff, it was tongue in cheek, talking about stuff in front of people is not my style, I prefer to get the job done 'un-noticed' and move on to the next job.

Competence and Confidence are two words that come to mind. Like you, Neil, I make my contribution very much "behind the scenes", and leave others to be the "the front men"! That's always been my forte, and has worked well enough in some of my previous lives.

As Huw would say, I'm not a "face"! But (to be fair) there are other people about who excel at being up there, on the podium (on the stage, at the lectern, whatever).

When it comes to "teaching", I guess I could do it in the formal sense if I simply followed a script, but ad-hoc (or off the cuff) would be no good in my case for two reasons:- 1) I would always have doubt in my own mind that I really knew my stuff, and 2) I have a tendency to jump (grass-hopper like) from one "topic" to another as my thoughts dictate (that's just how my mind works).* It can sometimes be great fun when I'm with like-minded people (aka, friends) but would most likely be a bit frustrating for students! Ha, ha.

I prefer "mentoring" ... kind of a quiet, one on one thing. That's nice too, as it leaves me clear to cuss when cussing is required! But yes (like you I suspect, Neil) ... I'm actually more use when I'm putting in the hours, left to my own devices (could that be a pun?). Most biomeds whom I've known and respected have been like that. What I call "quietly confident".

But "fair do's" to Brian (Rob Strange, and others ... Vaughan Pretlove is another who comes to mind) who can stand up there and keep the class entertained for days, without resorting to utter [censored]! Especially, that is, if I'm sitting there, plonked in the back row (and have been known to complain - afterwards - when I had discovered that my money had not been well spent)! smile

Just use the magic "Google" (for example ... see this one*). Also available on DVD, of course ... and would make a nice Christmas present. smile

How long could you survive ... ?

On a slightly different tack, Michael Tellinger's stuff is also worth looking at. Where are those missing guys (I think I may have spotted a few)!

* Check out the piece where JB is going up in the elevator (er, ... lift) ... clunk, click ... brilliant! Also note (if you follow the series of YouTube videos) the great continuity ... here we see JB wearing the same trendy flares and jacket wherever in the world his wanderings lead him!
