@Kawasaki, so how did your career in the UK progress, did you reach the top. (ditty from The Jungle Book came to mind there) or are there steps still to go?

I'm heartened to learn that my efforts are not entirely in vain, Jonathan. @Neil ... what makes you assume that "getting to the top" was (is) the aim? May I commend you to the link provided by Jon (see above).

Geoff, does ambition diminish with age?

"Whatever they do, men are too anxious to get to the end. Sex, eating a fine meal, playing golf - there is always a temptation to rush, gobble, run. That is foolish, for one should move at a relaxed pace through life, doing the work one enjoys instead of chasing ambition helter-skelter, pursuing one's ultimate death." - a character speaking in Len Deighton's 1967 book "An Expensive Place to Die".

More on "ambition":- If there ever was a politician whose honesty, human decency and ethical integrity were in inverse proportion to his political ambition and lust for personal power, it is [censored].
The entomological equivalent of [censored] would be a cockroach - an insect famed for its aversion to bright light and preference for living in the dark recesses of buildings, wallowing in the putrid, stinking filth of its own making, spreading diseases, and being so tough and resilient to pesticides and other hazards that if a nuclear war or asteroid impact wiped out every other animal species on the planet, it alone would survive.
It is high time that the boot of justice, human rights, civil liberties and public indignation stamped on this loathsome insect, and left his gooey, shattered exoskeleton on the pavement of Whitehall for the pigeons to peck at. I'll leave it for everyone's individual entertainment to guess which current holder of High Office in the UK this (recent) quote claims to describe. But here's a clue:- it's not GB.

Splat! (messy) But I think it will take more that a dab hand with a rubber sandal to sort out the particular bloke I have in mind. He's already had more lives than Felix the Cat. Here's another clue:- he was already well ensconced back in the days of your namesake! Meanwhile ... fancy having a crack at answering Neil's (rhetorical, supposedly) question?

Which one (there have been at least two awarded that epithet in recent times)? But the current holder (as commonly acknowledged) of that honoured badge of scorn is not, in fact, the despicable character being alluded to at the quote (although, it must be said, it could very well have been). Good try! Or perhaps (the thought occurs) you were thinking of the senior Saudi often referred to in similar (actually, identical) terms?
