Those logging on from outside the UK may be forgiven for not being aware that our new Coalition Government here appears intent on continuing the tradition established by the previous regime of almost daily announcements of 'initiatives' about ... well, this or that enhancements (or, perhaps more likely, restrictions) to our lives.

In this vein, our new Prime Minister has recently revealed (with, it should be noted, some passion) his concept of the so-called 'Big Society'. In short, this may be summarized (I think) as measures to 'empower' groups locally, and/or getting charity groups to take on tasks hitherto the sole preserve of paid government officials. One might note immediately here that achievements may be reached more cheaply that way ...

Many will know that Mr.Cameron has previously (and famously) talked about Britain's Broken Society ... so we may assume that he now intends to have a go at mending it. Myself, I would have used another label:- something like 'Hope from Despair', perhaps.

Anyway, I see here a chance to promote one of my own pet ideas ... namely, the cost-effective (read as, cheap) tech support of equipment donated to charity groups shipping overseas.

So, put plainly, here it is:- I (once again) propose a 'not for profit' group (a co-operative, even) of techs for the purpose of inspecting, repairing, testing, preparing and supporting medical equipment being donated for use overseas.

I don't expect to be overwhelmed with responses, but anyone interested might like to get in touch by PM. Likewise, anyone with ideas along these lines should feel free to pipe up. smile

Having looked in to the possibility of travelling to certain countries recently, it seems to me that one of the major expenses would be in getting my 'jabs' sorted out and back up to date.

Just another reason really to support my view that these days it may be better to stay at home and support guys 'out there' remotely. After all (and as I may have mentioned before), things have moved on a bit now, what with the internet and all.

The other consideration is that of 'best use of time'. At my stage of the game, I have an increasing feeling that I don't have too much (time) left! Days spent travelling from town to town in the bush, hanging around for endless hours in airports, and all the rest, may well be jolly for those looking for adventure ... but does it actually get the kit fixed? smile

Another action is the removal of PASA

And I like the picture on the NPSA page. Are they taking a BP with a Graseby 500? And anyone knows you do not put the cuff over clothing!!
Did I hear correctly on the news that the NPSA was going as well?

You mean a photographer who does not have medical experience - fair enough. But who is putting it on a web site without having any editorial control?

If that picture appreared on this site Huw would soon get it brought to his attention.

Anyone have any news on how the Quango cull is affecting the medical ones?

The current 18 Health Quangos will be reduced to between 8 and 10 over the next 4 years.
The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority and the Health Protection Agency are 2 of the ones set to go.
In addition, increased powers will be given to Monitor and the new Commissioning Board.

Myself, I have never seen the need for 'pretend' government agencies.

Let's get rid of the lot of them! frown

At least with 'real' government departments, we know who is responsible for them ... and who (both in theory and in practice) can be challenged in Parliament about their performance.

Geoff surely the whole point of these 'pretend' agencies is so no one is able to be challenged in Parliament?

If anyone here feels the need to "make a difference" ... you could do far worse than have your hospital get in touch with Mike Coleman at A2HW. It's as simple as that. smile
