But what about the future*?

Dear me, how long would it take Huw to delete all my posts (and doesn't John's mug-shot appear here, there, and everywhere)?

OK ... I'll give it some thought (you know, coming up with a new identity, and all that). frown

Lastly, here is an interesting tool. It seems to work OK for the UK, but I would be interested to know if it coughs up accurate information in other parts of the world.

* Once again, for me at least, it's the Comments that hold the most interest.

The 'future' would appear to be using the venerable old beeb to teach new programmers... ...Slowly Slowly Catchee Monkey? smile

Steve Furber mentions this sort of thing in the interviews I linked to a couple of posts back.

With a modern PC you're generally working quite high up the software stack (or, if you like, many layers of [censored] above what's really going on).

As we know, old BBC Micros and the like are ideal for really learning about the bits and bytes ... not to mention the hardware, architecture etc.

Meanwhile, my own son (already an "Old Bugger", according to a defintion recently given on this forum ... that is, born before 1980 [just]) has just discovered BeebEm. He'll "get it" one of these days (well, maybe). smile

How come no-one mentioned the 15th Birthday of Windows 95? frown

Why's that, then, I wonder? frown

How about the 20th Anniversary of Windows 1.0 (coming up in November)?

If you look at that stuff er, thoughtfully surely you can appreciate what was going on, the evolution, the sheer amount of work involved in Conquering the World, and all the rest?

Here's some more.

Here are a couple more moving tributes that I came across recently:-

Windows 3.x may have retired in '98 but not surprisingly I've seen it in use since then. (In a number of places actually.)

"I'm not replacing this - it works..."

(But then I still have versions of Win Me running text equipment clients blush )

Indeed. smile

I feel the same way about MS-DOS (and the various DOS clones) ... not to mention OS 1.2 (the BBC Micro).

A Genius Guy ... in the right place at the right time? Or, put another way, Timing is Everything!

Or maybe that should be Necessity is the Mother of Invention? Oh, so true!

Anyone interested in a PDP-11 clone ... all in one (small) box? smile
