Hi,
Does anyone know whether there are still any Brit Biomeds in Ras Lanuf in Lybia? I remember RASCO Advertising for Biomeds in the late eighties early nineties. Or is that another past glory?

You might be a bit late if you're thinking of going for that one, Bill. whistle

I hope not Bill.. frown

My personal view on the situation in Libya is that it can only get worse. I have worked in the middle East and North Africa (albeit many years ago) and it was a 'rickety' corrupt place then. Gadaffi needs to show some guts and let his people have a say. The guy's on another planet. Someone needs to put him in place. mad (preferably 6 feet under)

Very "PC", I'm sure! whistle

But don't worry, John ... you'll be able to welcome a few thousand of "his people" to Bedfordshire soon enough.

OK (and just to play the Devil's Advocate), but I'm rooting for the guy.

It's about time we saw a leader with some balls! That's something we rarely (if ever) see in our own country, after all.

At least he's not running away (like the others), so if he's prepared to become a martyr, then so be it, inshallah!

Guts? Yes, I think he has plenty of that. I'm just hoping that his mate Tony is standing firmly along side!

Meanwhile, once Britain has got our people safely out, we should keep our noses out of other country's affairs (IMHO) ... and that goes for all the others too (Afghanistan, for instance). frown

In contrast, it was uplifting to see the great welcome given to King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia as he returned to the Kingdom following medical treatment overseas. smile

I looked into working in Lybia after seeing adverts in "Expat International" in the laet eighties. But back then it looked like the wild west. I didn't fancy the 3 weeks on and 1 week off rota. I could imagine the scene in Benghazi on a Thursday afternoon, drunken expats littering the streets.

I also once considered one of those biomed positions at an oil company hospital just inland from the Gulf of Sirte (or, if you like, Sidra) - many moons ago now, though.

I was put off a bit by the long, drawn out hiring process (getting stuff notarised, and all the rest) and then the idea of 35 days on, 35 days off. As in:- where would I go (Malta, Cyprus)?

I couldn't really see how come the hospital staff had to follow the same working patterns as the (oil) workers at site.

Anyway, luckily, something came up in Saudi Arabia at about the same time, and so back off to the Asir Mountains I went.

Those were happy days (don't ask about now). smile

Until a week ago our company had numerous health projects throughout Libya. Although it’s not my choice for a posting the lads over there seemed to have fewer complaints than Saudi.

Not quite as nice as where you are now, though, Angus. smile

But (there again), a great deal of sand has blown down the wadi since I was last in KL (it would have been 1975).

Geoff... You are 'rooting for the guy'. ?? Maybe if you were there and able to witness what is going on 'first hand' you would be less flippant. frown
It does not mean that someone has 'balls' if they use a helicopter gunship to cut down their own people in the street. This shows a complete lack of humanity. It only shows that he is willing to use all means to maintain his grip on power.
