Any suggestions on an issue I have with a Graseby 500. It was serviced a few weeks ago with no apparent issues, battery test was good.

Now if plugged into the mains it powers itself up and alrms with a "pump needs service message" it is completely unresponsive and has to be turned off at the mains until the battery is dead (or disconnected). Opening and closing the door also turns it on and off (although turning it off is not meant to happen I'm sure), thus negating a sticky power switch being the cause, but the same issue remains when the unit is cycled on with the door it remains unresponsive. If left on battery it will switch on and off again continually as the battery gains some charge back. On powering up on battery the self test indicates a good battery. I am unable to get into any of the menus either.

Any suggestions apart from heaving it across the car park with the other mounting pile of dead ones would be appreciated.

I seem to remember coming across this one myself in the past - but don't have my notes readily to hand, unfortunately.

But how about the NV-RAM ... or did someone get the next service due date wrong a few weeks ago?

Be aware of this one, as well - which could possibly be related.

Other than that, your final suggestion sounds reasonable enough.

It's not the service date that's the issue (that was definitely set correctly), this is an error alarm rather than an informatin message. I also can't deduce anything related to the door switch or safety clip either.

Anybody else???

Hi. This sounds like a fault one of my colleagues had - Smiths said that the CPU board needed replacing.

As the board is pretty expensive, you may find that the more economical answer is to send the pump off to Smiths for a premium rate repair - though I admit this may be less straightforward from Cyprus!

Paul ... just wondering:- have you tried a known good, fully charged, battery (from another Graseby 500, perhaps), and seen what happened then?

The fixed price repair is probably the way forward. I have replaced the battery with a new item on the offchance but it nade no difference and the battery appears to charge correctly when AC is applied.

I was wondering if a damaged battery was dragging down the rest of the system (by draining a heavy current) - shunting, if you like. Just a thought, really.

Please remember to let us know the final outcome when everything has been done and dusted.

Try replacing the NV-RAM and then re-iniatialise pump.

NV-RAM usually gives an error codes (13,33 or 38). I had the "Pump requires service" message just few days ago and still can't fathom why it happened. It started by showing some video corruption while accessing the Technician mode then got worse and worse to the point that I could not power up the pump if the battery was connected. Disconnecting the battery I could power up but in few secs the message showed up and most of the keys would not work, including the on/off button. Also the message "Keypad locked automatically" was showing. In the instruction manual the description of this fault is very vague. It recitates "Electrical or Mechanical failure". The battery seemd to be ok. Still a mistery.

I'm new to repairing the 500. I had all the symptoms described above and no display and all the LED's flashing round on the display as well. I replaced the NV Ram and then had the issue of initialising the pump. The sheet that comes with the chip is not very obvious. You need to do all of the procedure. Instead it seems to say go to the set-up for the software level installed. (0.71 in my case).Other issues are you should have a 9 digit Sn. my one had only 8 digits.
Can I suggest you use document number 0150-0637 B which was much clearer.
