Any special considerations that I should be aware of before carrying out electrical safety testing of medical devices aboard cruise ships????

Yes ... you probably need to take Seaward test equipment with you. whistle

I would be interested to hear whether the ship draws power from onshore when it's "alongside", or does it still rely on a shipboard generator?

Although modern kit may not be too fussed about it, I would take a look at the mains power supply. In other words, its "quality" (voltage, frequency etc.).

Also, I wonder if they have UPS on "essential circuits". think

Lastly, I would pay particular attention to the "earths". I wouldn't be surprised to hear about "lack of" when you report back.

Are you only being asked to carry out EST ... or I/PM checks as well? And ... only electro-medical kit, or "everything" (medical gases, etc.)? Any dental? X-ray?

Anyway, have fun! smile

Sounds like a very good job to me. Regarding earthing, I think most ships use an insulated neutral system that allows important items (such communication equipment etc.) to function even when a fault develops.

Yes. It's an interesting topic. But surely the ship gets an "earth" (line) chucked across when it berths?

But there again, maybe the ship won't be alongside when Malcolm visits, for all we know at this stage.

So let's hope that we hear *more about it.

My only involvement in this sort of thing was when I was asked to check out some dental kit aboard HMS Tiger in Hong Kong harbour back in 1975. Long time ago now! whistle

* How about it Ed SWM ... any thoughts?

Hi all, no Geoff, I'll be using equipment supplied by Puke Bio-medical sick ,as to what is actually involved I'll find out monday, thought it best to volunteer first(always good to get out of the office) in fact you dislodged a couple of neurons with your last comment,I now remember having a couple of ship borne medical centers under my wing during my second Falklands "visit", and carrying out pm using a newfangled Rigel 233!!,cant for the life of me remember if the supply was transformer isolated.I'll send feed-back when I have it.
Any way thanks for any comments, got to go now and starch some creases into my whites!!
