OP BIFF_1980 Technologist Joined: Jan 2006 Posts: 45 UK	Hi all, Does anyone know of any regulations or guidelines on not to use gravity infusion lines? i.e. advising that all infusions should be through a pump with safety features.

OP BIFF_1980 Technologist Joined: Jan 2006 Posts: 45 UK	Because its not always used for rehydration. It can be used in some instances for drug infusion. Also an significant air bubble will still have effect on the patients whether its fluids or not.

Geoff Hannis Super Hero Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 14,798 Likes: 71 the path less trodden	No need to be baffled ... in general, syringe pumps deliver drugs, whilst infusion pumps deliver fluid volumes. There are always special cases, of course. For instance, when "piggy back" infusions are used with volumetric pumps (where a drug may be infused together with a volume of some other fluid via a secondary line). Anything more than that, you will need to be specific about what drugs you are pumping, in what volumes, and in what concentrations. See also TCI.

I think maybe you are generalising when practices across the UK (and indeed the world) can be very different from your description. I could send you a list of 100 drugs we use through a volumetric pump. Inotropes being the most important group of them all!
