I have just received my April wage slip - I got paid less this month than last month due to a rise in pension contributions. Our trust is basing any salary rise on appraisals which will happen in July, are then reviewed and then approved, so - if we get a wage rise - it will occur in September. All this time the money is in the Trust account earning interest, not ours.
The Government says wages are rising faster than inflation - it seems not if you work for the NHS and they control our wages.

The word is that there are 20 million people looking for work across the European Union; and 5 million of those are young folk.

How many of those do you reckon would be biomeds (ready to roll, or aspiring) who would be more than happy to step into your shoes, Robert ... pay rise, or no pay rise (or even at half of whatever it is you're getting)? think

If you don't inspect ... don't expect.

The point I was making is that the Government says one thing but the reality is different.

Well Robert, that's hardly anything new, is it?

We've constantly been lied to ever since I began to take an interest in *these things (and began to wise up). That would have been about the time I sat my "Eleven Plus". whistle

* So-called "Current Affairs", I mean.

Robert, I noticed a new feature on my pay slip, it actually stated the percentage of my salary that I paid in pension contributions. It'd be interesting to compare how much we pay into our pensions compared to those in the private sector. Also don't understand why our contributions have gone up over the past few years when the NHS pension scheme makes an annual surplus of £1.8Bn. Just who or what are we funding?

I noticed that as well and it made me wonder the same thing.
When I add up tax, Ni and pension contribution, the total deductions from my salary mount up when I do overtime, I do wonder if it is worth it, but as it is "voluntary" (Ha Ha*) I should not complain.

I think that this sort of money goes into "Infrastructure" projects (HS2 etc.). I read an article in a Civil Engineering trade mag a while back where they were complaining that the gov't had reduced the amount of "pension" money available for infrastructure projects.

Sorry to be the one to inform you, Bill ... but there really is only the one type of money.

The Government (any government) doesn't have money of its own, but rather has to acquire it somehow from the citizenry.

In reality, there is only the one Pot of Money (mostly empty, of course). For instance, National Insurance isn't (an insurance policy) ... and the taxes you pay at the end of the month gets passed straight away to today's pensioners (social benefits, overseas aid, and all other worthy causes).

But don't worry, if all goes to plan, your pension will be paid by the taxes levied at that time on your younger colleagues - who, hopefully, will still be working! smile
