Good Afternoon All

We now have a green light for the launch of the Foundation Degree replacement, which is a level 5 Diploma in Medical Equipment Technologies that is accredited by the Open College Network (OCN). The launch date is the 12th of January 2015 and then on a 6 monthly basis for new cohorts.

The Diploma will be distance learning and takes place predominantly in the work place, completing workbooks, on line tests and web based activities. There will be a residential weekend per module at our Training Academy, for learners to attend. Our highly skilled experts will deliver practical based training and you will be formally assessed.

The course content is:
Level 4
Mathematical Principles for Medical Engineers
Electrical and Electronic Science for Medical Engineers
Mechanical Engineering Science for Medical Engineers
Principles of Anatomy & Physiology for the Medical Technologist

Level 5
Patient Monitoring, Therapeutic and Frequency Dependant Equipment
Anaesthetic, Operating Theatre & Medical Imaging Equipment
Managing Medical Equipment
Medical Engineering Project

The duration of the course is 18 months at a much reduced price of only £7,995.00.

For further information you can email me: info@avensysmedical.co.uk or visit our website: http://www.avensysmedical.co.uk/training/

Just out of interest, Nigel ... what sort of stuff do the "Mathematical Principles for Medical Engineers" sessions contain? What level are we talking about there?

Yes ... "Striving for Biomedical Engineering Excellence" sounds good. smile

Hi Geoff,

We have introduced HNC maths ( new money level 4) along with similar levels for electronics and mechanical engineering and A+P the course is 18 months in total , the second 9 months is HND level ( new money level 5). The FD which we have been delivering for the past 7 years required significant updating which we believe we have achieved.

We have also begun to develop out BSc (level 6) again distance learning and weekend practicals, this will be available October 2016 to coincide with students finishing their diploma.

If any senior engineers out there in the NHS who wish to become involved in medical engineering course development and in fact delivery of our courses or in fact support of young engineers please contact me directly, your time will be paid for and what better way to put something back into the system. Young engineers need your support knowledge so, so pull up a sandbag time and swing that lamp Geoff.

Hi Geoff, I thought you may be out fighting Ebola ;-)

As Rob has explained on the level 4 side of things it equates to HNC level. As our upgrading course back in the day.

The mathematics course covers areas such as: Algebra, vectors, etc. Calculus, transposing formulae used in engineering and manipulation of complex numbers.

For a full description on Learning outcomes and assessment criteria the QCF reference number is L/506/7803

I'm sure we could always do with help from you Geoff, but we always end up swapping war stories :-)

I was wondering if the maths was directed at specific "need to know" stuff with a medical equipment application. To be honest, Ohm's Law and the sign wave equation has always been enough to see me through in the Real World.

"Back in the day" when I was at school (pre-Arborfield, that is) maths was invariably badly taught, without even a hint of inspiration, or a reason why the stuff was being "taught" in the first place. That, coupled with missing a year of school, resulted in Yours Truly always being a bit of a duffer when it came to maths. Luckily, for me, the army sorted me out (to some extent) - but it was always a struggle. frown

Only in more recent years have I become more interested in maths (in fact Leonhard Euler is one of my heroes). An interest in programming languages probably had something to do with that. I have also found that the graphics and animations available at on-line explanations are much better than white chalk squeaking across a worn-out blackboard!

So yes ... find some inspiring teachers! smile

Ebola:- my immune system wouldn't last 24 hours out there, Nigel. But I applaud those who are stepping up to the plate (22 Field Hospital, RFA Argus, various aid workers et al).

It seems to me that there are several important subjects missing such as Programming, Networking and Microprocessor Applications.
And Subjects such as Anatomy and Managing Medical equipment in my view are not desperately relevant in a way that requires a full subject module to be dedicated to each of them, whereas it would be for someone who was studying nursing or radiology.

Hi Nige,

Can the Arborfield Cse be used to gain units via accredited prior learning, similar to the grandfather rights for VRCT?

Are you going to Silverstone next week, it'll be good to catch up?

regards

Matt

Big Steve

Thanks for your feedback, we continually look at the syllabus and upgrade with additional subjects were we feel that it is most needed. This course differs slightly from the previous Foundation Degree which we had developed and have been delivering for the past 8 years in collaboration with KU and EP with great success. Upto 200 students completed the programme and more than 50 % applying for and gained their Hons degree. Avensys staff, under a variety of guises e.g. Capital Medical 2002-2006, Eastwood Park 2007-2013 and now Avensys, not forgetting for those old enough to remember; MoD Arborfield (med and dent course 1982-2006), so we do have some experience within this field.. A+P and managing medical equipment, we feel is an essential part of this course.

If you would like to volunteer your expertise in helping to develop a networking and programming module etc I would be more than willing to have you on board.

The main broad subject headings are simply that, they hide a myriad of subject matter and fields including some networking applications. Compressing this course into 18 months will certainly push students to their limits of understanding.

Why not cone over and visit us at our stand during the Phillips conference to discuss further....

Regards.

Hi Matt

Yes I will be at the Conference this week, come and have a chat.

The now "RCT" is always a hot topic for Biomeds UK wide and how to be accepted onto it, now the grandfather rights have come to an end. There is a lot of work going on in the background so equivalents will be accepted, but for now you still require a level 6 qualification to become a member.

If anyone does sign up for the level 5 Diploma at the conference, they will receive a 5% discount on the course.

Discussions for networking and microprocessor applications: at Avensys we do recognise that this technology is becoming the norm in our world and we are currently working on a package that will address these issues.

See you Thursday.
