I hear that Windows 10 is "out".

My understanding (?) is that it's aimed mainly at W8/W8.1 users ... and, for the meantime at least, W7 users are best advised to "leave well alone". smile

Anyone care to comment?

Geoff, it is aimed at W8 because the best features of W7 were not available and a lot of people started upgrading from W8 to W7 (that is not a typo) we done a few computers here and it was not straight forward. You can 'upgrade' from W7 to W10, in fact I am downloading the file onto a USB as we have quite a few computers to upgrade (the benefits of not being tied to IT)if it is better than W7

I don't have a lot of time to review all the guff that's flying around about W10 just at the moment (and hopefully never will); but this one caught my eye:-

Meanwhile, I can't help but notice that (as expected) W10 uses the "Metro" interface (or something similar). You know, to make it look (work?) like a smart-phone and (or) tablet. frown

To be honest, my only interest in W10 (apart from the design aspects) is whether my old stuff will run on it OK. To that end, I shall probably wait a while (a year or two) and try it on an old laptop, or whatever. Hopefully all the major bugs will be ironed out by then, and third-party patches (enhancements?) will have become available.

Surely that is 'downgrading'?

I love deadlines, I like the wooshing sound they make as they fly by.

I think it may be a matter of opinion... wink

Most folk expect "upgrading" to result in improvements of some kind. So, no ... what Neil said was right. whistle

With regards to W10, the "big picture" behind it all is probably that MS has realized that they can't sell software the way they once did ... so, having to find other sources of revenue, they've identified subscription services and cloud services as being the long-term targets.

You have been warned! frown

Maybe you also need to be warned about "automatic over-night updates" ... whereby "you wake up in the morning to the most up-to-date version of Windows"!

Yeah, right ... but what about waking up to a machine that is under the control of malware, or worse? frown

I just hope that "automatic updates" can be switched off. Does anyone have the gen on this stuff yet?

By the way - what became of W9? OK, don't ask. smile

Windows9 was not used as some code inside Win95 and Win98 was called Win9.This might have led to some confusion......and who is still using it???

I prefer this explanation (as it has the ring of truth about it). smile

By the way, a better way of deciding which version of Windows is in play is to check out the Version (although I see that Windows 10 is actually 10.0)!

It's not so much about the OS itself, but the software (which could very well be considered "third-party") that runs (or sometimes, doesn't run) on it which folk want to continue using.

Why? Because they like it, they're used to it, and it does the job!
