Does anyone have details about how patients are tested* for the "Corona virus"?

What (lab) equipment is used? think

* RT-PCR : real-time polymerase chain reaction - seems to be the most popular method

@Heather : Microplate Readers, I should imagine. These have become many and various now.

I am aware that there are some PCR (polymerase chain reaction) Analyzers as well ... the Agilent AriaMx and Lumex AriaDNA, for example.

@Malcolm : maybe they thought that, as you are a Brit, you'll be able to man up and tough it out. frown

Keep Calm and Carry On!

Do you have any patients confirmed with the virus? think

Did you hang on to your S6 respirator?

@ Geoff, as for toughing it out I'm trying to shake off bronchitis left over from the man flu two weeks ago, added to the fact I cant get back to the UK anyway.

Tomorrow starts the PM campaign in the Laboratory, so onward we go.

As I write the ICU is awaiting the second screening from a patient that resulted previously positive...But I'm still going to catch the bus home.

No S6 either, the QM was Very insistent that I hand it back in.

Dr.Geoff says ... go home, then self-isolate for a couple of weeks!

Seriously, if you've already got a chest complaint, how come you are the "chosen one"?

If I was the boss (and things are really as bad as they're made out to be), I would limit the blokes' visits to patient areas (and the labs) ... and have a roster using the younger blokes only (on the grounds that their immune systems should be more resilient).

No doubt the PM in the lab(s) can slip for a month or two.

Stay safe, Mate. smile

Hi Geoff, we have in fact put the PM on hold, but the day really drags not having any toys to play with...

From the news Italy is awaiting the big hit, which is supposed to arrive in next 7 days or so, to that end you can only leave your home to go work if your business is still operating and then go home again, you can also leave home to purchase essentials (which knowing my Italian friends includes shopping for the lasted pair of Ferragamo or Jimmy Choo shoes !!!)

I think the biggest worry is that we are running out of dedicated icu beds.

Any way as yet we don't have any confirmed cases.

"In bocca al lupo" as they say here

Good luck with that, then. smile

What happens if you're naughty, and dilly-dally on the way home ... does the Carabinieri pounce on you and give you what for (or even, a Jimmy Choo-ing)? think

But about lab PM ... in my experience the labs in total (Laboratory Department as a whole) invariably comprises the largest amount of kit (equipment numbers). How "deep" do you normally go?

OK, stuff like hotplates, centrifuges, water baths and so forth are straight forward enough; but how do you get on with the analyzers et al that may be (and often are) covered by some sort of service contract with an outside vendor? Just a check for condition (aka a quick check), plus a review of service reports (and maybe a chat with users to ascertain they are getting good results)?

And what about electrical safety testing of lab kit (especially assuming that you are blessed with mains plugs and sockets of the Ticino type)?

Rumours are abound at the moment with an eventual closure of our semi-private hospital as the anaesthetists are probably being being redirected to public hospitals.

Fortunately nearly all of the analysers are covered by contracts, so we just have to schlepp the fridges and freezers outside to give them a good clean 🥴

No Ticino Magic just good old "Schuko"

I'll keep you posted.

Interesting that ... do you clean the fridges and freezers yourselves? I always liked to blast away "around the back" (compressor etc., where all the "fluff" likes to congregate) with my electric blower myself - and yes, I know that purists always say that a vacuum cleaner should be used - but do you defrost and clean internally as well?

Any how often ... annually? think

Do you do much with microscopes ... or leave the users to clean their own objectives?

Here is an excellent site about microscopes.

Schuko? Just as bad (non-polarised, non-fused, and usually "straight pull"). frown
